Student LPN Stress

Published

I just wanted to ask if anyone finds the LPN program difficult? I have recently completed my first semester which consisted of 7 classes. After winter break we are now only having 4 plus clinical. For the first time since I started I am feeling very overwhelmed. I don't mind the studying, but I do feel at times that they crunch things together so much we only have time to cram in the information (some of our classes are only 1 month). I worry that I am not getting the education I will need to be a good nurse. I don't care about my marks I really need to ensure that I know what I am doing so I can give safe care. It's just a little scary is all.... Also if anyone has any tips on stress management?

Thanks!

Stress management in nursing school is the same as stress management in any other area of your life.

You need to have "down" or "you" time. Even if it's just soaking in the tub with a trashy novel on Saturday night.

Every other PN student in your class feels the same way. What College are you studying at? What is their CPNRE pass rate? That's a good indicator of how good your education is.

What you need to look at is there is a reason some of the classes are only one month long. Three hours a day for a month more than covers nutrition. (I just tossed all my course work and schedules, why we keep this stuff I'll never know). Everything a SPN needs to know is more than covered.

The time spend out on your first placement will demonstrate what you have learnt and how you have absorbed the knowledge. In a way it just kind of clicks. Like you'll look at a patient and KNOW she's a two person transfer or that that latest dose of Colace probably isn't required.

Here's a heads up and it's nit picky but the nurses who you meet on clinicals are LPNs. You and your classmates are SPNs (student practical nurses). The "license" is only granted after graduation AND successful writing of the CPNRE. You are in a practical nursing programme. This was clearly outlined in my first class.

I have debating for the past several months on whether i should do the lv to rn or go straight to rn. I have been reading several post and it sounds as if it would be beneficial to me to do the lvn to rn bridge. Is there anyone that can suggest a creditable lvn school with a high clex passing rate in souther ca.

This is the Canadian forum. You would be better to post on the CA forum.

It was like that when I was in school.Yes there is a lot to absorb. You need to keep on top of things and you will learn it. A lot of your learning will take place after school. Many things are just skimmed over in school. When you need to do them at work you will learn them in depth.Once you get out there it will all make sense.Don't compare yourself to the nurses that you encounter in clinicals. Remember they have lot of experience.

Thank you for your points...I agree I think I was just having an off day. I am doing very well in all my classes and feel I am learing a lot. Sometimes it does feel overwhelming though. Thank you for your positive words!

You're lucky you only have 7 classes, first semester in George Brown RPN has 9!!! Thank gawd I have 4 exemptions first semester, I would go nuts.
