Struggling w/ prereqs

Published

I am currently in my second year of college and taking prereqs for getting a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. So far most of the courses that my campus requires have been easy for me except for stats, chem and now microbio. I know sciences are a MAJOR part & important so that is why I am starting to worry that I won't be able to become a nurse... I am not ready to give up but I just don't know if I should maybe try something different like become a tech of some sorts?

Though not everyone who wants to be a nurse will be a nurse, I say exhaust all possible options before making the switch to another career path.

How are you studying for your science/math courses? How are your time management skills? I can not even begin to tell you how many math and sciences courses that I failed growing up because "I wasn't a math, science, or school person in general." Deciding to pursue a career in the medical field was one of the toughest decisions I have ever made. Though self-doubt was still there, I had time to grow and mature. I also made the decision to look up study tips from pre-med and nursing students on YouTube. I am not a perfect student, but I was determined to get nothing less than an A in any pre-req.

Take a look at how you study and spend your free time. Are you cramming? Are you reviewing with 24 hours? Have you formed effective study groups? Have you talked to previous students who did well in the course? Is an SI or tutor available? Are you creating your own tests questions? Have you talked with your professors during office hours?

Keep working hard if this is really what you want to do and figure out what you can change. Yes, these classes are tough and not everyone will pass, but you have made it this far. Best wishes!

I second what the other PP said. Sciences are hard, but there is no way around them. I am taking micro now and I can tell so far I think, IMHO, it is the hardest science course I have ever taken! But I am so glad I have taken chem, and A&P before taking the micro. There is so much chemistry and anatomy (of the cell) in micro that truly helps grasp some of the concepts. So, make sure that you understand chem and, if you have not taken A&P, that too, to really understand the micro.

I'm terrible at math too. I've been avoiding all the math related prerequisites to the end lol. I recommend taking psych statistics if the schools you are applying to will take it. I got an A! All I had to do was read and memorize.

micro was not bad. Once again read. I recommend quizlet!! It was a life saver for me and I have terrible memory. The repetitive words that I missed really help me retain the information.

I havent taken chem yet. Kind of dreading it but I hear it's just memorizing formulas and such. Helps to have a helpful professor. Videos will help a lot!

Ask yourself.. do you really want to be a nurse? Do you want this to be your career? You need to feel motivated. You need to want this. Don't beat yourself down and think you can't do it without trying. If you want this enough, you'll be able to beat the fear of not doing well in your classes. If you want this, you will study hard to pass these classes. No excuses. You can do this. If you think you can't you won't.

Good luck!

I'm sorry that is happening to you. But you are not alone. Those classes are quite abit much, and former knowledge and alittle nerdiness is pretty much a success. Well I'm taking micro (my last) and i admit, some Info requires a double look or three...etc. But i think if you follow the learning objectives and do your research on the topics you should feel more confident.

Why should you change and become a tech when your already in college. You can become a tech mayBe as a part time while your studying to be whatever you are pursuing.
