Struggling with test taking this semester

We've moved into med/surge this semester and I'm really struggling with my exams. I've gotten a 75 and a 79 and the minimum to keep in the program is a 75% average on the 5 tests before anything else is factored in. Last semester I was always mid - high 80's, so this has been a huge worry on my mind.

I know part of the problem is my test anxiety this semester is much worse. I run out of time and scramble to pick answers at the last minute. I study, keep up on all my reading, practice NCLEX review questions daily and do well on those so I am at a loss.

I scheduled an appointment to go over my test w/the tutor center at my college to see what in the heck I am doing wrong this time around.

Did anyone else struggle in med/surge or your second semester? Any other study tips or advice? I would really appreciate it so much!

I think a lot of students, myself included, have trouble with nursing test questions and how to answer effectively.

Do a search on this topic. It has been discussed a LOT and you might find a lot of great info there.

If you have any NCLEX study books, be sure to read the tips in the front about how to answer questions or buy a 'strategy' book. I bought one by mistake and it was a bigger help than doing practice questions.

Knowing how to break down each question really helps. The test-taking strategy sections really help teach you how to do this and it will make a difference in your test scores.

good luck!

Fundamentals was my problem. I studied--to the point of overkill, and had so much anxiety, you could smell it. This quarter [i'm also in med/surg] I vowed to never study that way I did in Fundamentals.

Study tips that have worked for me this semester:

DO NOT over study--only allow yourself so much time for reading per hour.

Build your care plans around your topics in theory.

Refer to your care plans as a tool.

If your instructor uses powerpoints, make flashcards--make NCLEX style questions out of the slides.

Drink water before, during, and after studying.

If I am uncertain about a question, I always think how each answer could effect ABC's. Know your norms for labs and assessment. Know your parameters for when NOT to give pt. their meds, and know when to contact pt's. physician.

I'm doing good this semester and I attribute it to my new study habits and new attitude towards school.

I hope my tips help.

some tips that got me through was to:

1. notice a pattern to the professors class material vs test content

2. take simple notes on important areas

3. simplify the notes (mnemonics etc.) to recall easier/fit more

4. go into the test COOL

5. hydrate, sleep, bring sugar candy while testing to keep brain sharp ;)
