Stroke???

Published

Have a question. A friend of mine called and was telling me that her father went to the store and he wasn't feeling too good then he broke out in a sweat and started vomiting. When he got home his BP was 175/125. Needless to say he ended up going to the ER. I am a new RN and was wondering what some of you thought.

From what I have learned it sounds to me like a stroke. Although I have never heard vomiting as part of that.

So could you tell me what you think?

Thanks:)

Most responders will tell you not enough info. My guess ranges from a cerebral event (not necessarily a stroke as you are thinking of it) to an acute MI. Without knowing anything else if is really hard to answer such a generalized question. It would be helpful to know age, general conditon, risk factors, preexisting conditions etc.

I do hope he makes out okay.

The warning signs of a Hemorrhagic Stroke IS nausea and vomiting!!! I'm very sorry for your friend, their father, and you, to hear about this, but most people think of severe headache, and difficulty swallowing, TIAs and such, but nausea and vomiting are classic sxs.

Thanks so much for your reply. The only thing I do know about the man is that he has had a previous stroke. The only reason I posted this is because when she told me those few symptoms it sounded so much like something I had learned in school and I just couldn't remember what. Also I couldn't remember if a person experiencing a stroke would have vomiting. Yes it could be a MI but she made no mention of chest pain. I am not sure of his age and I know with such limited information there is no way to be 100% sure what it was, but he is receiving medical attention. I was just wondering for my own curiosity.

Hi Pamela :)

I too thought stroke like Brownie and you, but all the factors EastCoast suggested MUST be pondered before a definitive diagnoses can be ascertained. Praying for your friend's father and the family too. Whatever he has I'm sure is very unsettling to the family. :kiss

Not making a "DX" here, just informing the OP that nausea and vomiting "some" of the classic sxs, as is the sweating and N/V with MI. Just needed to point out that fact before this turns into a discusson about what is or isn't:)

Thanks so much to everyone.

And Brownie, I know.....When my friend called me and told me about her father I simply just made sure that he was getting medical attention. She didn't ask me what I thought and I surely didn't tell her either. I leave that up to those who are caring for him because I know there are a lot of other factors that must be looked at.

It's just those symptoms made a little light go off in my head and I just couldn't remember. Thanks so much for refreshing my memory.
