Stressed and worried

Published

So I just failed English Comp for the second time and I think I will be on Academic probation now. I don't understand, I got straight A's in LPN school and now I am struggling to get a 2.0 in this college. They say to go this route when you need to work, raise a family etc, well then they need to revise their program so it isn't so hard to pass these tests. I have always been good in school, always did good on exams, but these are totally different. I wish they would at least tell you which ones you got wrong. How can you better yourself when you have no clue what you did right or wrong. Is there anyone else out there that feels this way? I just feel like I might have just wasted 4 years of my life and thousands of dollars on something that I probably won't succeed in.

Hi, I can feel your pain, pat pat, where can I get more info about this course? Thanks

Have you thought of taking English Comp at a B&M school and transferring the credits over?

Two other options for Eng101... Straighterline, which I did last year. It took 2 months and $239, because I was slow in writing the assignments. It could probably be completed in a month. I believe that would be $144. ($99 a month, plus $45 for each class) Also, if you do a trial membership, they might give you a coupon good for a free class. ACE accredited, and accepted by Excelsior as part of the 7 credits you can submit through ACE.

Another option that people have mentioned: UExcel. It is through Excelsior, but may be easier than taking the Eng101 Exam.

Good luck!

If you've never taken a college-level English course, this is probably why you failed. I've always loved English in high school...actually throughout elementary school as well. Always, ALWAYS gotten great grades in English! When I began college, I thought I would just test out of the exam. So that's the route I took. Low and behold, I FAILED!!!!! So I had to take the course. Then and only then did I realize just how little I knew about proper responses to questions and which sentence would be most appropriate to those questions. After getting a B in English 1101, I took the English comp exam and score 63!!! What a difference! But no one would accept it because I had a passing English 1101 on my transcript and therefore, was forced to take 1102. Got an A in that class and have been producing quality essays ever since.

I'm all for exams for credit. Hey, the quicker, the better in my book! But, there are some things that an exam will ask that you may not have studied. For example, my 1101 teacher said that in compound sentences, if your first action word ends in 'ing', then all action words in that sentence should be used in the same form. Little details like that means the difference between passing and failing......forget about what 'sounds' right. Even the sentence I just wrote is incorrect. It should say, 'Little details like that MEAN the difference between passing and failing'. Once I remove the unimportant words between the subject (details) and verb (mean), it's easy to find the mistake.

But I'm no English teacher....just a nurse who appears to have an opinion about everything, unfortunately. Good luck to you! You will pass this class!!
