Strange or silly symptom description

Published

I am working on Anxiety disorders. I have a fill in the blank worksheet. I've answered 70 of the 71 questions, but I just can't find the answer to this one.

"Term to describe a symptom recognized by the individual as strange or silly is............"

Does anyone know this one?

Irrational? A lot of times when talking about phobias, that word comes up.

Specializes in Critical Care, Cardiothoracics, VADs.

Irrational for sure.

Thanks for your replies. I thought of irrational also, but the word is also on a crossword puzzle handout and it has eight letters. The fifth letter is an "o". Darn. That also ruled out " bizarre". I will let you guys know what the final answer is. We find out on Thursday.

Is it "paranoid"??? Even though the "o" is the 6th letter?!

NEUROSIS!!!!! That has got to be it!!!!!!!!!!!

NEUROSIS!!!!! That has got to be it!!!!!!!!!!!

Or...NEUROTIC??? Let me know, the suspense is already getting to me!!! LOL!

Interesting.... If it were a class assignment, I would really object if neurotic or neurosis were correct. Both are still household words, but they've long been phased out of official psychiatric lingo.

My guess for irrational was not great either, since very often the patient does not detect that his thoughts/symptoms are irrational and they only appear that way to the care provider.

I totally agree, Eric, and the only reason I thought of those answers is because I AM a former panic D/O patient! Talk about household words--defintiely used in my household!!! I went straight to my psych manual (all my reference books are out right now, NCLEX coming up soon) and your answer of irrational is right on, however not fitting in her puzzle! So we shall see....:monkeydance:

Do I ever get to know what the word was ???????!!!!!!!

Sorry it took so long guys. We ran over in class and our instructor didn't get to the answer. I emailed her for it. The answer is..........................

"Dystonic" as in egodystonic.

I would never, never, never have come up with that one.

Thanks for your input.

I would have never guessed that one!!!! Thanks for updating us and GOOD LUCK in school!!!!!
