Hey everyone..
i registered onto this website mainly for this reason because i know lots of you have gone through the application process and know the ins and outs of nursing school ._. the nursing program that im aiming to get into is that of Stony Brook University's. Now ive gone through a bunch of threads related to that and have thoroughly read peoples responses so i kind of have an idea of whats expected of me..but since my situation is different than others, i figured itd be a better idea to personally ask everyone for their advice regarding my case ._.
I'll be a senior in Stony brook this coming fall but im not graduating yet...now i can only blame myself for all of this, but please hear me out ._. i came to this school not knowing what i wanted to do or what i was interested in...so i just kind went with the flow..took whatever i 'thought' would be okay and might help me out in the future..now i knew that i had to get into some medical field so i did take courses in that direction (science, stats, etc) but i recently just decided to apply to nursing school..my third year..it took me three nasty years of undergrad college to figure out what i MIGHT be interested in ._. but anyway, so i told my parents about it..my parents really want me to follow the footsteps of my elder sister who has successfully aced everything she has ever pursued..(shes getting ready for med school and all that jazz now)..over the course of my undergrad years, i have come to accept that im not very smart...really, im not D: and i knew it right off the bat that i wont be able to handle dental school (which is what my parents REALLY REALLY want me to apply to)..im just not cut out for it..i wont be able to take the workload and i know for sure that my parents would just be wasting their money ._. so i brought that up today during lunch and told em i was serious about nursing school..and obviously, my parents werent happy at all..my fathers not even talking to me right now
that was just a lil background..to show u how desperate i am to make things work
onto the main concern
HOW do i apply to nursing school?
i have the prereqs list right in front of me and i have most of em already completed except for social psych, A&P and one arts and humanities course...i think im good with my non-nursing electives but i have to double check to be sure...im volunteering at the stony brook medical center this summer so im hoping to get a recommendation letter from the RN in charge..(i dont know who to get 2 other letters for..the only professors i kind of know and like are the ones in which i got a C as my final grade =/
ive struggled throughout my undergrad years with a 2.0-2.3 gpa...and with more Cs than As and Bs (its stinky, i know ): ) but this spring semester, i managed to get a 3.2 as my semester average..raising my cumulative a lil more than it was before..
also, even though i have 'psychology' listed under my major..im not really majoring in that D: someone told me it didnt matter what i majored in as long as i was going towards my field (science)...and i also heard that i dont really need a major cause once i get into nursing school, i just graduate with that as my nursing..
since i did decide things a lot later than i should have, i know that ill probably be stuck at stony for another 2-3 years ._. but i need you guys's help ): i want to be all set by the end of fall semester (do you think its possible? ._. ) and if not fall, then definitely by spring...im willing to work my butt off this coming fall and get another 3 point something gpa so that i cud at least apply with some hopes of getting in ._. i dont know what to do..i feel like my whole life is falling apart ):
i know we have to apply a year in advance right? so should i fill out the application now? or wait until im entirely done with everything? also, what other things could i do to make getting into nursing school more likely? =/
im not having a very nice day so please be gentle with ur responses ._.

I was actually rejected from the Stony Brook nursing program for this coming fall, so maybe I shouldn't be answering this (but have been accepted at another school). I had a 4.0 cumulative gpa and I had a year of volunteering at Stony Brook hospital as well. There are people though that were accepted with much lower gpa's and no volunteer, and people with what I had, so just do the best you can from this day forward with school. Get good recommendations and your shot is as good as anyone else. Nursing school is very challenging though, so don't go into it thinking it's going to be easier than other majors. I would wait until you have most pre-reqs complete, at least the sciences. You can take classes in the fall semester and the grades will be seen for the application, but the spring classes will only be seen as in progress. Good Luck!
thank you for taking the time out to read my post and respond ._.
I did meet with someone familiar with the nursing program and they told me the same..of how it can vary from person to person..not every 4.0 student is guaranteed a spot and not all 2.5s are rejected so i am hopeful ._. i just gotta work super duper hard in the rest of my years and like u said, come up with an awesome personal statement..and maybe do more hours of volunteer work ._.
good luck to you in all ur endeavors (:

Your chances look bleak for getting into the program. Think realistically. I was in a similar position at Hunter College, terrible GPA etc.
If I were you I'd look into a 2 year diploma program or LPN school then bridging. I prefer the former however, it's a lot more straightforward. It is very costly, but about the same as tuition, room, board at SB.
It doesn't hurt to apply all over the place and weigh your options, the last place you want to be is taking useless classes with no other options.
Another option is get your degree and an accelerated program, but again GPA becomes an issue.
If you really want it, you'll find a way. Your parents pushing you is definitely a double edged sword in your case. The best of luck to you.

I am assuming you're an adult capable of making up your own mind and taking direction of your own life. Having said that, follow your heart despite what anyone says, INCLUDING your parents. If they want you to go to dental school and you don't, it's a waste of their money and your time! Don't give up on your dream of nursing school if that is what you really want to do. Volunteer @ the hospital and work around nurses, get a feel for it and you will know (as I did) whether that's your direction and your passion.
I was waitlisted for Stony Brook's 1-year program last year and did not get in. Reapplied this year and am currently in the program! Don't give up! Find out what you need to do to get in if SBU is where you really want to go. Little by little I am discovering that not everyone in the program has perfect 4.0 GPAs. There are people in my program that got C's in micro. Clearly, the essay and the recommendation letters must sing your praises enough to help place your academic record in context. I can only speak to the 1-year program, but from what I can see @ SBU, they really look at the person beyond grades. Everyone in my class has something special about them that shined through in those applications, you MUST do the same if you want in!
