Stony Brook FNP Summer 2021

Published

Hi Everyone

Has anyone apply for the FNP program Stony Brook? Is anyone get interview?

All programs begin in May/June. There is no January or Fall entry.

The application deadline for the 2021 academic year has passed. The application for the 2022 academic year will open in August. ALL supporting application documents must be in by the deadline. Before applying, please carefully read all of the application instructions. The link to the application can be found here https://healthsciences.stonybrook.edu/apply/

The School of Nursing does not maintain the electronic application system, nor does it collect application documents.  All issues pertaining to the electronic application and supporting documents should be addressed to the HSC Office of Student Services at 631-444-2111 or [email protected].

Applicants must have a BS in nursing and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 across all institutions attended, even if only for one class.

Please note that admission to the program is very competitive and application does not guarantee admission.

Those students accepted into the Distance Education programs will be required to attend a one-day orientation, usually in April or May.

Students will be required to attend “on-site intensives” during those semesters in which they are taking clinical courses.  The on-site intensives will be for two consecutive days at the beginning and the end of the semesters.

The SBU School of Nursing MS program is 45 credits. The part-time pathway will allow you to finish in three years (average 7 credits per semester = two classes). There is no full-time program.

Clinical rotations are done in the last four semesters. Students are responsible for networking to locate their own preceptor for their clinical courses. Acceptable preceptors are:

NPP- Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry

MD - Psychiatrist

Social Worker

Psychologist

Students are required to do one semester with an NP. It is likely 4 primary care sites will be needed. Clinical hours are 120, 120, 180, and 180.

Please visit http://www.stonybrook.edu/bursar/tuition/ for current tuition rates and fees.

Additional information about the admission process can be found here  https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/hsstudents/admissions/admissions_faqs?accordion=undefined

Just got my rejection from the FNP program. Not surprised - I didn’t get an interview!

I am so sorry to hear that. Try again next year don’t lose hope. I am awaiting my decision and is super nervous. I applied to PMHNP program. I guess I will be hearing from them soon. Stay encouraged!

Just got my acceptance letter! Fingers crossed for everyone!

Congratulations ? ? ?  I hope everything works out well for you. Any info you can keep sharing about the program and the application process will be appreciated. As well, if you can let us if you thought you had a strong background. Was there anything you feel that helped you get accepted?

Hopefully for next time.

When you say "Not surprised - I didn’t get an interview! "

Why do you say that? Do you feel you didn't have a strong application or background?

@Itrin Thank you! I definitely thought I was lacking in RN experience - I have under 3 years experience as an RN. Most of the people I interviewed with had 5-10 years experience. But I had a previous career and advanced degree from that career, so that may have helped.

I am also currently working in the setting where I would like to practice as an FNP (primary care), so I felt that made me a little more comfortable during the interview speaking to my goals and direction as a student.

Wishing everyone the best of luck!

Okay, thanks for the information.  I am already applying to another school.  If I don't get accepted I will continue to apply and may come back to this one. I have one year RN experience but even though I am not expecting to immediately practice as a NP right after graduation I want to get it out of the way so when I get more experience  and feel more comfortable I can use it. Besides since it takes from 2 to 3 years to complete the NP Program that should allow me time to have a much better background.  Thanks for sharing the info.

Hi! Has anyone who has been accepted heard anything about next steps/orientation? Excited to get started!

Not at all! I think I’m a strong candidate - I just meant that I knew that I wasn’t in the program because I never received an interview. It’s a competitive program though, and lots of people who qualify for it won’t make it in.

I’m excited to be in the PNP program though! I didn’t want to move out of pediatrics, so I would have been very happy with either.

Hi! Does anyone from the PNP program want to connect elsewhere (facebook, email) to chat about things like orientation and classes whenever they start! I'd love to get to know fellow students.
