It's almost september, which means people are starting to get their applications for nursing together real soon. I'm currently in the 1-yr nursing program here at Stony Brook. A previous alum started the 2014 thread for us, so I figured I do the same. Feel free to ask questions or message me with them. Good luck to everyone applying! :)
Ash6117- Have you ever attended Stony Brook? Maybe that some sort of glitch with solar or something.. I would wait until you receive an email. Does it say anything about paying the deposit and new student preferences? If not, if you get an acceptance it will probably allow you to accept it and pay the deposit I would assume.
I dont know if you already picked your capstone/medsurge but I STRONGLY recommend choosing a a DEU at Stony Brook as it virtually guarantees you a job upon graduation. I graduated this recent May and between the 2 years and 1 years id say around 50% of classmates still dont have a job. DEU Students do both their medsurge + capstone on the same unit, and almost every single one of them immediately got hired on the floor they did their DEU on. As in we graduated in May, most DEU students were working on their floors in June.Unless you plan on working at LIJ (thus doing your medsurge/capstone there) I really think DEU is the way to go.
Hi mhy12784 , thanks for the info. Would you know what were the main reasons people didn't get hired after capstone? I was kinda shocked by the rate of unemployment after gradation. Do you think doing my medsurg in stony brook and choosing a different location for capstone would decrease my chances of getting hired (at the capstone location).

The biggest reason is the NY economy. Its really tough for nurses right now, and Stony Brook only hires so many people. They try to give their own jobs, but with the new healthcare law and economy some people are uneasy about leaving their jobs making openings all the more difficult to come by.
I think its improved a little, my guess (this is just a guess) is maybe 70-80%~ of the people I graduated with now have jobs, although quite a few JUST got them and possibly didnt start yet.
It wouldnt decrease your chance of getting hired. The single best way to get hired (at least from experience from my graduating class) was where you did your medsurge/capstone. Stony Brook has several different capstone options.
One is the dedicated educational unit, where you do both your medsurge AND capstone on the same unit (only at stony brook on select floors). From what I witnessed, every single person to do this was offered a position on those floors they did theirs on. Of course the 2 biggest DEU units is Med Surge (where the most openings were, and likely will be when you guys graduate) and a surgical stepdown.
The other option which I did, is a "traditional" capstone. Your med surge you can get assigned to any floor in the hospital, and then your capstone you can choose a different location (ie the ICU at stony brook, st charles, a hospital in NYC etc). This is the best way to get a job at a hospital OTHER than Stony Brook. Of course how much it helps depends on what kind of unit your capstone ends up on, who your preceptor, and of course how significantly you network.
Your medsurge though you have no choice in where youll end up, so you might end up on a unit that does NOT hire new grads. For example I did mine on a respiratory intermediate icu, and they dont hire new grads. So while I learned a lot in medsurge, it didnt help me get a job.
Then the 3rd option is LIJ which is the best way to end up at one of the many LIJ locations and get a job there. I never had an interest in going west, so I cant really tell you much about it other than many of them got hired at LIJ.
Eitherway in my opinion, the most probable way to get a job immediately after graduating is to do your medsurge/capstone in a DEU unit where you do both your capstone/medsurge on either the medsurge floor or surgical stepdown. Of course they expect you to stay there for at least a year, so if its something youd be really miserable with, doing your capstone at an alternate location isnt a bad way to go either.

Since they didn't hire for your medsurg unit, did you think u had enough time to "shine" for that limited capstone time at the other unit, from your or your friend's experience in ordered to get hired. thanks! 8))

Well my capstone was in an ICU that also doesnt hire new grads. I didnt know all this when I chose mine. but I ended up working at another hospital entirely.
Theres definitely enough time to shine at your capstone, if your capstone is a unit that hires new grads your chances definnitely improve. I think that your personality is the single most important factor to getting a job via your capstone rather than skills/knowledge. If you can network well, youll have major options.
LAGD0208 ... I have that same message that I already accepted or denied all decisions..I had it since I first logged on to solar in October when no one else had that message but I never got an acceptance email or anything so far
I have the same exact problem!! Have not had an interview or any e-mails from them. So weird!
