Stony Brook Accelerated BSN

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello Everyone,

I was looking online a while back and I fell in love with Stony Brook in New York and the accelerated BSN program that they offer. Here's what I'm working with:

Anatomy & Physiology 1: B

Anatomy & Physiology 2: In progress (anticipating B)

Microbiology: B

Chemistry 1: C

Physics: B

My undergraduate gpa: 2.909 (Bachelor of Arts in Women's Studies)

Graduate School gpa: 3.7 (Master of Science Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis)

(Both degrees from the University of Wisconsin)

I just finished my CNA course 2 weeks ago and I test on March 23rd (I'll definitely pass, no doubt in my mind)

I will have 6 months (more or less) of healthcare experience when I apply to Stony Brook's Accelerated BSN Program.

Here are my questions:

1. Do you think I'll get admitted?

2. What's Stony Brook's acceptance rate into the accelerated BSN program?

3. Who should write my 3 letter's of recommendation?

4. What is the tuition?

5. Are there any other great programs with 5 prerequisite courses anywhere in the country that I should take a look at?

Thanks a bunch! :-)

I hate to say it but their program is very hard to get into (at least it used to be). I didn't make it with an undergrad GPA of 3.3 in biology, As/Bs in all the prereqs. and 1 year volunteer work at a hospital. I know other people that had similar experiences. It was the only school I didn't get into, I even got into a few direct entry BSN/MS programs. Maybe they accept more students now though. Best of luck!

TeeGee, I agree with Gingerbreadman's comments, a lot of your questions were addressed in the SBU ABSN 2011 thread which is very active and will be at the top of the NY nursing programs threads. Paco69 has some excellent info (as well as many others) regarding acceptance issues etc. Hope that helps. The ABSN 2011 group has had its initial round of acceptance, and now is waiting for waitlist determinations, which could come right up to the starting day of classes. The program has a fantastic reputation, but does seem to be fiercely competitive, I am hoping for a slot in the regular 2 year BSN program but the ABSN thread has been super helpful. Good Luck!

I am a graduate from the accelerated nursing program. it is very competitive to get into. I suggest you apply to both the two year and one year program. they get hundreds of applicants and only accept about 65, 66 students. well that's how many students were in my one year class. its a good program with a large workload. Good luck getting in!!!

As Buckeroo stated, there is another Stony Brook thread that I started that has lots of discussion about the accelerated BSN. Go here:

I was waitlisted last year but reapplied this year and got in. It is VERY competitive. I recommend taking some of your prereqs over and shooting for A's. You also need some good recommendations and a compelling essay. Your recommendations should come from at least one professor of your prereqs (it will be a better letter if you get an A in the class) and anyone else who can speak to your specific potential in a rigorous nursing program and eventually as a practicing nurse. My biggest concern in your case however is your undergrad and prereq GPAs. They need to be substantially above 3.0, and not sure how much weight is placed on a grad degree. Best to be honest with you considering I have been at this admission process for 2 years now.

Good luck!
