Hey Guys,
I applied to Stony Brook's 1 year accelerated nursing program in August. I'm also applying to their basic 2 year program, but I'm really hoping for the accelerated program.
Anyone else applying?
Hey everyone!
I am new to this forum and I am thinking of applying to SBU's ABSN. I spoke to the director and she basically told me not to bother applying unless I have an average of 3.3 GPA. I graduated and have a 3.04 Cumulative in my current school but I had a 3.6 when I attended one semester at Stony. I am really worried because I do not have a high GPA but I am retaking my prerequisites to boost my GPA. Is this possible? Should I even apply ?
@mikzdn This really disappoints me that she told you not to bother applying. I am honestly dumbfounded and unimpressed. Her comment will now hinder my opinion of this program. Girl, let me tell you that you should APPLY. Even if you had the 2.3 minimum. One of my friends got into COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY DIRECT ENTRY PROGRAM WITH A 2.7. I will say though that it will just be more important to stand out in other ways like volunteering, medical experience, letters of recommendation your statement and interview. You should apply, you can do anything you set your mind to. Also, there are plenty of other schools that would LOVE to have in case Stony does not workout. I believe in you and think you have just as much of a chance as the rest of us!
@mikzdnDo not get me wrong, Stony Brook is very high on my list, but I am so surprised that you were told this. I agree it is important to be realistic, but everyone should be encouraged to apply. Maybe she just does not want you to waste your time. I am not sure, I was taken back a little bit though for sure.

Thank you so much!! I am still going to sign up. It did kind of discourage me because she was part of admissions.

Hey!! That is really devastating and frustrating to hear but you shouldn't listen to what people tell you. You can do anything you set your mind to and don't be discouraged! I had a counselor tell me to change majors because nursing was "too hard" and that I wouldn't make it. My nursing GPA is not super high but I'm still applying anyway. Honestly just go for it, its an automatic no if you don't apply.
Hey thank you for making this forum!
I applied to SBU for Spring 2021 Accelerated Nursing program as well. My GPA was average however I have a lot of clinical experience, volunteer and work experience. I hope they take a more holistic approach than just basing the admissions off of GPA.... Good luck to those that applied!!

Hey I hope you decided to apply! You never know what will happen. I am in the same boat with an average GPA but have a lot of volunteer and clinical experience from previous and current job experience so I submitted my application and hoping for the best! If I don't get in oh well... at least I can say that I tried! Good Luck ?

My friend heard back and has an interview next week. Apparently when she was speaking with Pamela Crisculo there are 900 applicants, 125 interviews and 80 seats to fill. So the acceptance rate is very slim ugh but just be patient and stay hopeful!!
