Stomach pain-not hunger

Published

Hello! I'm a new nurse and a new school nurse. What do I do when kiddos come in for stomach pain. They say they are not hungry. What should I do?

Specializes in kids.

Also for girls, last period? are the ovulating? or having their menses? or is it possible they are pregnant?

If they have been ill recently any chance their spleen area is tender, often a symptom of mono.

Didn't someone her once say something like - Don't look for the zebra in a herd of horses?

"When you hear hoofbeats, think of horses not zebras"

Just a reminder that stomach aches can be part of a stress response, and you can't know by looking at kids what they are going through at home. Maybe consider having a policy of notifying the school counselor if you have any kids coming in regularly so that they can check on them?

I got the peppermint lol

Specializes in ICU/community health/school nursing.

One of the beautiful things about school nursing is that you will get really good at focused physical assessment.

My first year I assessed the everloving crap out of everyone.

Come to think of it, I'm doing it again because I changed ages - but you will eventually find that automatic list of things you do for X condition. Also you'll be wrong numerous times and have to beg forgiveness but hey.....no vomit in the clinic means they can go back to class, right?

Thanks for the advice
