Still have questions about Excelsior

Published

I am going to apply for the associated degree in nursing of Excelsior. I have several questions as below.Thank you for any comments.

1. I am a foreign doctor and have taken most of the general courese before except the nursing core corses. So based on this, if I studied 4 hours a day, can I finish in 4-5 months of the nursing concepts 1-7?

2. Someone mentioned the best way is to asking for the study materials and starting to study until you are going to take the exams, then enroll?

What's the advantage in doing this? Is it because we can save the yearly enroll fees?

3.I am in NYC now, so can I take all the concepts 1-7 in NYC? Even during weekend? I only have time during weekend. And where are the test centers located in NYC? Is it easy to sign in a test time? No waiting time?

4.Anyone knows if there are foreign doctors finished from this courses and got a job.

1) Yes you can finish in 4-5 months with just taking the NC exams. I did my NC1-7 in 5 months.

2) Yep, this defers your annual enrollment (Annual student fee). So, you can take all pre-reqs (not that you need any) and NC1&2 prior to officially enrolling. I would call Excelsior and talk it through with them in your case, with foreign pre-reqs done - there may be an accepts of transfer credits issue...

3) I don't know about the scheduling for NYC area Prometric centers. The prometric website does not let you look at their exam schedule until you have paid for the Exam through Excesliro and got your Authorization To Test. In my experience, however, my nearest testing center offers Mon-Sat appts in morning, afternoon or evening time slots. There are usually plenty of spots available and I had been taking mine on Saturdays without any probs.

4) Nope, sorry. Best wishes! Why are you going the nursing route? I worked with a doc from Croatia who had practiced medicine there for 19 years. When he moved to the USA they did not accept any of his education and he had to go through med school all over, from the beginning... Yikes!

Thank you so much for your reply. Are you LVP or foreign doctor?

To be honest,Why I am going to go through this way is because I need to get green card so that I can match a hospital for doctor's residency training. I heard it is an easy and quick way. At the same time, I feel nursng is a good job and I can use all my medical knowledge to help patients which make me happier than working with animals in the lab. If I can not pass the doctor's board ,then being a nurse is also great for me.It is not that easy to be a doctor in US since foreign doctors always have oral English problem. When Americans come to the hospitals, I guess they mostly perfer to see an American doctor. But they don't care much about the nurses whether they are native or foreigners.

Excelsior is a great program and I am on my last class. It is worth every cent and you schedule the test when you are ready.Yes you can do it quickly with all your knowledge..Good luck

The latest scoop is that Excelsior will soon switch testing companies, from Prometric to Pearson VUE. Pearson VUE is the company that administers the NCLEX exams. I think this will be a good switch and their centers generally have a number of Saturday appointment slots. I think the switch-over occurs September 1, but don't quote me on that one.

Good luck to all of those who are pursuing EC degrees!
