HI again!! I am not real familar with all this new-fangled computer stuff, but I'll try again!!! :uhoh3: My thanks to Patrick, :p who got me on the right track of the Florida forum! I am hoping to get a few more ideas from ya'll!

I have been out of nursing for thirteen years, and have to take a refresher course before I enter back into the professsion. I have researched the community colleges, and the few there are around me here in Leesburg, are not offering anything at all!! I have called a few local hospitals, and they refer me back to the community hospitals!?!?!? I am truly at a loss - if there is such a shortage of nurses, why is it so difficult to get those of us who want to come back the courses that we need??

I did email the State Board, and was sent a list of approved remedial courses, but it is geared for those nurses retaking their RN exams. There is NOTHING about a refresher course for someone who has been out for awhile and needs a few updates?!? Please help if you can!

Happy New Year :balloons:

to all, and drive safely tonight so you can post tomorrow!!

Sincerely,

Carol M.

Carol - in the State of Florida, the BON does not require a nurse that has been out of nursing to go through a refresher course as long as your license remains active. However, with that said, most prudent nurses desire to get refreshed before they re-enter practice.

You do have some reasonable options. The first and perhaps the best, is to explore employment opportunities with your local hospitals. Most are willing to refresh nurses that desire to re-enter practice and will provide you with a comprehensive orientation and preceptorship. Right now, many hospitals in Florida are hiring new graduates and they could easily put you into a new grad program for your training and updating. It certainly is worth looking into.

Good luck and I wish you the best of luck.

Maybe you could check the local hospitals websites to see if they have a program of such. I know the hospitals here have it on their website.

I cut and pasted this information. Hope it helps.

Listed below are organizations that offer refresher courses:

Broward Community College: http://www.broward.edu/locations/chse/conted/nuref/index.jsp

IEA Health Systems: http://www.cmiregistration.com

Indian River Community College: http://www.ircc.cc.fl.us

Miami-Dade Community College: http://www3.mdcc.edu

Seminole Community College: http://www.scc-fl.edu

The Bert Rogers Schools offer refresher courses online. Unfortunately they do not offer a clinical component. You may consider contacting hospitals in you areas to see if they have preceptor programs (such as those offered for new graduates): http://bertrogers.com

You may also want to contact nursing schools in your area to see if they offer refresher courses.
