Steps for US-RN to migrate and work in Canada

World Registration

Hi!

I am currently holding a US-RN license. I have heard that starting January 2015 Canada accepts NCLEX passers or US-RNs and it will no longer require us to take the CRNE. I want to migrate and start my career as a nurse in Canada. I have read their news update but still got confused along the process information on how to do it. Can anyone help me with a less complex explanatory steps on how I can start my process to live and work in Canada as a nurse?

Thank you for your time. More power and God bless!

Each province has different requirements and will depend on the province you plan on living and working in. Ontario has come out and said if you applied to the province before Sept 18th then you did not need to resit NCLEX but if you apply after this date then you have to sit the NCLEX again.

Suggest reading in this section regarding Canada as immigration requirements are different to nursing requirements and having one doesn't mean you will get the other.

Are you a US educated nurse or an internationally educated nurse who happens to have a US state nursing license? Are you a US citizen? Do you have a BSN (BSN is entry to practice in Canada)? Are you an experienced? If so, do you have specialty experience?

You need to start with a provincial college of nurses. If you are an experienced specialty nurse, like most other areas if you have in-demand skills, certification and experience you will have an easier time securing a job & work rights. As opposed to a nurse with no paid work experience as in the US & Canada there is little demand for non-citizen, non-PR inexperienced new grad nurses as

And US RN implies that you are a citizen or permanent resident with a US nursing license. Based upon your posting history, you appear to be a Filipino nurse with a VT nursing license. Did you look at the CIC to see if you meet immigration requirements? You need to choose a province where you hope to live & work. If Ontario and you haven't yet applied you will need to retake the NCLEX-RN. You need to follow the provincial college of nurses requirements for internationally educated nurses and apply for credential evaluation from NNAS. Good luck. It's tough out there

Hi thanks for you comments. I'm a filipino nurse with a valid vt rn license. I'm current working as an operating room nurse here in Kuwait. I was wondering if it would be easier for me to transfer to Canada with my US licwnse? Whichever province will have me. I heard Alberta is open. I just dont know where and how to start with the processing.

Thanks for replying. Maybe i'll try other province. How about Alberta? What do you know about it? :)

You don't just "transfer to Canada". You need government permission to migrate here.

Read any of the threads on nursing in Alberta. Government restructuring of healthcare.

Not going to say you won't find a job but you won't be offered one before you get here. Positions are being eliminated and bumping has been used to keep senior nurses in work. AHS has also been running OR courses to upgrade nurses within the system and are in reality training their own.

You cannot endorse a US state license to another country.

You need to review licensing as an IEN in your chosen province. If you meet provincial requirements you may be able to have proof of NCLEX passing to the CoN. Depending on the provincial CoN decision regarding accepting NCLEX results.

You are a Filipino nurse with a VT license. Not a US RN

Are you licensed in the Philippines? If not, you won't be eligible for licensing in Canada as you must have a license from your country of education.

Do you have a valid US SSN? It is will be required as of 3/31/15 to have a valid US SSN to renew a VT nursing license.

Just somethings to think about.
