Hi! I am just curious about the order of things to get in as a transplant nurse. Someone told me that you have to be asked by the transplant doctor to be on his team and that you cannot just actually "apply" for such a position.
I was going to do med-surg for a year or longer in order to be comfortable with my skills then move into ICU for at least a year to three and then try for transplant.
Maybe transplant is the wrong word. I am not sure what to call it. I want to work with transplant patients before and after and during their entire journey. Is there such a job?
Thanks for any and all info!

I did transplant nursing in early 90's. I'm not sure how it is now but at that time, transplant units were very willing to train med/surg nurses and it wasn't a problem for me to learn it even as a travel nurse with 3 days orientation to the unit. I loved working with those patients, I entended that assignment at UVAMC and went to UKMC after that and stayed for 7 months on the transplant unit there. Good luck to you. It's a very interesting field.

Thank you very much!

In order to work on a transplant unit in a hospital, you do not apply to the doctor but to the hospital.
I you want to work in the doctor's office, then you would need his/her approval. To become the Transplant Coordinator for your hospital would require approval of the transplant doctors.
I would recommend getting the experience first before anyhting else....
Good luck............. :balloons:

Thanks so much! I will only start to look for positions when and only when I can feel absolutely cofindent with my skills.
I hope in the end I will eventually be able to be part of a research team for transplants.
Thanks again!
