Hi! I am in San Diego, Ca. I'm currently taking my pre reqs for nursing and general ed classes to transfer to 4-yr univ/nursing program. I have heard that getting into this program is very competative; 500 applicants-60 choosen. Also it goes by a point system, no waiting list. I am 33 years old and a good student, i get A's and B's but am still concerned that I will not get in. Not getting in can set me back as far as starting someplace else since different schools have different requirements(similar but diff). There is a private school-Point Loma University that is an option but much, much more expensive but seems more likely that I will get into that program. I need to make a decision soon so I can take the appropriate classes next semester-different schools/diff classes. time budget!!! If anybody has gone through this or gone to these schools can you please advise or share your experience? I'd love to hear from you!!!
I have gone both routes with good experience..I graduated from a small community college with my ADN, lots of support form faculty, one even got me a rant when she thought i was working too much ! the private college I am in now for my bsn is wonderful..again, very small with very supportive faculty..i would reccommend getting your non-nursing classes out of the way first at the public college..cheaper !! then, see which progrm fits your lifestyle..i travel an hour to the private school but its sooooo worth it! :D Good Luck!
Be sure to apply to both, and even check to see if there are others. Agree competition for state schools is very high, but your age and maturity are a plus. Private schools have lots of funding and scholarships. As soon as you hear you have an offer from the private program make an appointment to investigate financial help. Also check out the Johnson & Johnson site for nursing scholarship money: http://www.discovernursing.com
One scholarship that comes instantly to mind is the Talbots Scholarship for women who earned their high school diploma at least 10 years ago. http://www1.talbots.com/about/scholar/scholar.asp
There a lots of little 500 and thousand dollar scholarships - ask if you can use your high school college center. The local organizations moneys have less competition.
