Hi guys! Can you give me info regarding working to state of samoa? My agency recently offered me a job in this state as an alternative for my california application since there is a retrogression. I already passed NCLEX last Nov and CA does not issue license until you have your US-SSN. In order to have US-SSN you have to be in CA and they only give 3yrs time for you to get there. And now that there is retrogression,my agency is offering me a job in Samoa just to get US-SSN to save my license. I am so anxious about what's happening and confuse on what to do? HELP!!!:uhoh21:

Samoa is not a state in the US, but it is a territory. Please check out everything very closely, and do not consider signing until you have every single piece of information that you need.
CA does not issue a license if you do not have a SSN#, but if that time passes, you do not need to retake the NCLEX, only submit another application.
If you go to Samoa, you will not be coming to the mainland for several years, you need to decide what you want to do. But really think it thru.
thanks sooo much suzanne! Your info is a big help....God bless!

there are two samoas, the american samoa, which is a territory of the u.s., but not a state. and west samoa,. and you don't apply for ssn in american samoa. you need to get it within the united states.

Hi what do you mean with this "If you go to Samoa, you will not be coming to the mainland for several years, you need to decide what you want to do." Do you mean to say if I go to samoa I cannot go to USA mainland? Once I get my US visa I will leave Samoa.is it not possible? Please advice.Thank you.

You will not get a SSN# issued to you until you have a visa or document that permits you to work legally in the US. A tourist visa will not get you a SSN#.
You will be signing a contract to work in Samoa. You need to take responsibility for that contract and not just walk from it when your visa comes thru for the mainland. That is what I am talking about. There is not one employer that will want you to just work until you get a visa and then leave them. Why should they invest in training you?
Most contracts are for two years. And you still need to go thru their immigration, it is not just automatic that you can work there.

Be very careful when checking out positions in US Territories, rather than states. There have been some bad press regarding abuses against workers in Samoa/Marriannas Islands.
While they are US territories, there are significant differences in worker protections there as opposed to US states. And while some territories (Puerto Rico comes to mind) are fairly close in worker protection, others are not.

yup, absolutely true.
did you experience working in american samoa? please advise
nope. i never been to american samoa. but i have samoan friends, and i worked with samoan nurses. if you are planning to work in usa, might as well go to usa, not just territories....just to let you know, many very sick patients from us territories like samoa, micronesia, guam, are flown to hawaii for treatment. honestly, if i was a nurse from those places? i'd rather move and work where the healthcare services is much, much better. if you have more questions, don't hesitate to pm me.
