Am wondering if anyone other students have somthing in their past that might

prevent them from acquiring their RN license. I have noticed that others have poised the same question and have been advised to contact their state nursing

board. that's exactly what I did.

In my case, I have more than one dui conviction and asked if this would affect my eligibility. The california state board representitive repiled " we can't prevent you from going to school ".

I asked her a second time explaining my concern of putting in so time and effort and then being told I would not be eligible for licenseing. Again, her reply was we can't prevent you from going to school and added we look at a lot of things.

to say the least I was disappointed. Has anyone had a similar experience with their state board or a similar background like mine who have obtain information as to were they stand. I would appreciate any feed back.

I would be careful...I knew someone in a similar situation and they could not get licensed. If it is once it might not be as big a deal as repeated. If they say they can't prevent you from going to school...that's just it BUT they can prevent you from legally working as a licensed nurse. It is sad but true--the past seems to haunt the future sometimes. I am sorry that you are in the situation you are in and hope you have grown from your experiences (not meaning it bad but dui puts so many others besides yourself at risk that I truly hope you have put this behind you!) Guess if I were you I would consult the faculty at your school on their take as well as try to get more solid answer from the board of nursing...try a web search too on the topic.

I think that you have to submit proof of rehabilitation and actions to support your ongoing recovery. I also agree that multiple DUIs may be problematic. Maybe you should consult an administrative attorney who specializes in state board matters???

I think it is time that the various boards of nursing make a list of what things on your record will prevent you from being licensed. It is just wrong to be evaisive to people who try to find out before attending nursing school. I have never heard of a single person who received a definitive answer from a BON before attending school. :angryfire

While I do think it is ridiculous that they won't give someone a straight answer to this question BEFORE they spend thousands upon thousands of dollars, only to find out that it was all for naught, I can see their point in saying that each case is looked at individually. If the person had had their DUI's say 20 years ago, and can show proof of continued sobriety and regular attendance at meetings or with a counselor, that would be different than someone who had 2 or more DUI's since last June.

A simple solution to this problem would be for the BON to offer the background check and make a decision before you go to school. This would obviously require a fee and also need to be repeated at graduation in case of anything new that might have happened during the years at school.
