I am starting my pre-reqs in the fall but the closer it gets the more nervous I get. Here is the deal. I keep reading the "Failed out of nursing school forums" Its starting to scare me. I mean most of the people on that forum that failed out are very smart (I mean, they got that far) And here I am just a girl who never went to high school and I suck at math. I keep thinking (If they failed out, why, in this world would I think I can make it)I am a christians so I am trying to put all my faith in God but I still can't stop thinking if I am wasting my time. One girl on here said she went 3 years and 50 or so thousand dollars in debt then she failed 1 class and got kicked out. She still has to pay all that money back and wasted all that time in school just to mess up in 1 class and get kicked out. I was like WHAT! Could they really do that. I just don't know guys, maybe I am crazy for attempting this. I keep rocking back and forth in my mind. One minute I am going to do it and the next I think (yeah right!) I have already got my schedule and registered but I still have time to back out.Let me add that I am already in the medical field ...CNA, EKG Tech, Phlebotomist and got my CPR and BLS. I have worked in various places and I know 100% sure I want to be a nurse. I sit and watch trama life in the E.R and code blue and I cant wait until I get there. But then there is that doubt in my head. Any one want to give me encouragement..PLEASE.. Did you ever do what I am doing right now with doubting etc... Thank you guys
Thank you so much! What verse is that? I'd like to read it when I am down.God bless you too!
It's Jeremiah 29:11 -
"For I know the thoughts and plans I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome."
(from the Amplified Bible)
God Bless both of you :-)
Pick up this book, Dosage Calculations Made Incredibly Easy by Springhouse publications. Google it or whatever you have to do. This book will take you back to BASICS such as simple fractions, metric system, builds on that, and than moves to the dose calculations (don't worry about those yet, just focus on the basic math chapters for now).
Note:
When I did my LPN in high school I had just passed math thru the cracks of the public school system, and I couldn't even divide decimals!!! My nursing (LPN) teacher pulled me aside, and said something had to be done, and I picked up this book and sat down with a notebook, pencil, and chapter 1 opened up in my room.
P.S. Doesn't matter if you didn't go to HS, the drive and will can take you anywhere...
Nyteshade:
Thank you for your honesty! I will be getting this book. I have started to learn basic algebra, fractions and a few others. I suck at percents If someone were to ask me what 21% was of 30 is I could not tell you with out a pencil and paper to write it out. I also suck at radicals(I think thats what there called) I am taking basic algebra and then intermediate algebra at school when I start. Hopfully that will help. I have been trying to start studying for what we will be learning I have (Through Gods help) tough myself all the organells in the cell and most of the skull bones so far for A&P1. For philosophy I have begun reading about some of the philosophers. For english I am teaching myself how to write APA style papers and now for math I will be buying this book you listed. I appreciate all the help. God Bless!
Tonya - it sounds like you will be a welcome addition to our professsion!
Go to the academic support center at your school, and find out what resources they offer. Many of them offer free tutoring and other extra resources to help you get on your feet and find your way. I would NOT have lived through Chemistry without the Math and Science Center at my school. They rocked!
If you're at school from 8 am to 9:30 pm 2 days a week...those are some seriously long days. Make sure you pack good, high protein, non-junk snacks, and drink lots of water. Find a quiet, comfortable place to study and relax between classes - the library is always good, and the student union, while noisy, is often a good place to meet up with classmates and commiserate! :)
Use what resources are available - you've already shown you're resourceful by getting the training you have, and finding this forum online. So leverage it to your best advantage. Ask questions here - lots of experience. You can PM me anytime, and there are others on here who are happy to do the same, I know.
Best of luck and if you stick to it, you can do it!
Let me toss in my 2 cents on this one.... Why not.
I became a RN about 2 years ago. I got BSN. Let me tell you, it was NOT an easy road. I will freely admit, I royally screwed up in high school. I had the attitude of D=Diploma, this sucks, get me OUT of here. I had planned on graduating and going to work forever in the family business and everything would be ducky. For the first few years it was, the due to some issues with other family members, things changed! (Its a LONG story)
In the aftermath, I found out ... wow, I have No "real" education, nowhere to go, I'm working my tail off slinging drinks, and waiting tables in a local pub. I did that for a while, scraped up every penny I could, started out "waitlisted" at a community college, and I did fantastic, transferred to a 4-year college, got my BSN, and I much say ... I'm loving my life. I thought I could never do a BSN, now I am thinking about going back for my master's and becoming a NP (Nurse Practitioner).
YOU can do anything you want ... Sorry to sound like a fortune cookie, but its true. For me the best motivator was everyone that said I can't. The more someone tells me I can, the more determined I am to prove them wrong.
You sure as heck won't make a million in nursing, but at the end of the day if you're happy, who cares?
