Starting Nursing School in September 2008:)

Published

Hello Everyone!

I'm overjoyed to say that I've been accepted into the nursing program offered at my community college. I've been to orientation, and ready to begin classes in Fall 2008 :) However I'm nervous to begin, I must take and pass a medical math exam with a 97% to continue in clincal practices, I was wondering if any experinced nursing students and/or nurses have any helpful study tips?

I also was looking for advice on on the ADN and BSN option, currently I'm in school for my ADN. I'm not sure if to continue for a BSN. Any advice? my dream is to be an ER nurse :) Thanks!

Hi Big Heart,

I too am starting in Sept. I just found out today. :yelclap:

I will be doing a Part-Time program at our CC in the evening since I work Full-Time.

I am excited and nervous as well.

I did buy a math calc book to study this month so that going in i am ready for the test. We have to take one and score in the high 90's as well.

I will be interested to see how things are going for you.

Best of luck to you.

Hello,

Has anyone done clinicals at Huntington hospital in Pasadena and Glendale Adventist. I will start my first semester of clinicals this September and I'm still trying to decide which hospital will provide the best experience for me, does anyone know. I would appreciate your help.

Thanks

What kind of experience are you looking for? I live in the area. Both are good hospitals. A better parking space?

Hi Daytonite,

I've heard from someone long ago that when she was doing her clinicals the employees at the hospitals were not very nice and made clinicals difficult. Therefore, I wanted to know in terms of working environment which hospital would offer me a more comfortable experience. If you can tell me which hospital has better parking that's great too. Which hosptial is more modern, etc.

Thanks

Employees come and go so what was true then may be totally different now. Anyway, it's all subjective.

  • subjective - affected or produced by the state of one's mind or resulting from the feelings and temperament of the person's thinking rather than objective thought

Maybe that particular student wasn't getting along well with the staff.

I spent a lot of time at Glendale Adventist (I was there the morning of the Amtrak crash a few years ago when they were bringing victims in to their ER) and they have an outdoor parking for staff and students. Glendale Adventist is built on a hill and some of the parking is below it. Pasadena has several indoor parking lots, I believe. Either case, count on parking farther away than patients and the rest of the staff. They are both pretty up to date as far as being modern.

Congratulations for getting in the program!!

I, too, will start this Aug. I'm very excited and nervous, as well. I jsut hope that everything will turn out fine.

About the test that you're going to take, is it the TEAS test? Because we are also required to take it. But I know, it's not really a requirement for us to pass it. Anyway, goodluck!!! I hope you do well on the test!!

Anyway, I'm under the Rn program of Bakersfield College, but will attend classes in Porterville College.

Again, congrats and good luck!!

When I started nursing school two years ago, I used to hear students getting nervous about the drug calculation exam. When I took it, I passed the first time with a 98%. I thought the exam was basic math, multiplication, subtraction, addition and division. I think most students failed because of test anxiety and cant do conversion for instance gram to milligram. What I did over the summer before I started class, I went over conversion and formulas. When you take the exam, just go over your answers and read carefully what the questions are asking. You should be fine....the math is way easier than algebra.

Here are some packets that I gave other students also, it is great if you don't know a lot of math as it starts at the beginning with detailed answers all the way through. If you have any questions on it let me know. I also am starting in a few weeks. But I have been and EMT for 10 years and I am also a Pharmacy Technician so I am hoping its a little easier for me since I have been out of school for 10 years, have a 2 year old and am getting married in october.

congrats, I just graduated August 2008 I listed a whole lot of care plan and study books that helped me through nursing school on EBAY 11 books with drug cards everybody check it out. item id 300251461145
