Starting NS w/ no prereqs = suicide?

Published

Hello everyone. Today I am sending in my application for nursing school. :yeah:This particular school will accept people that haven't taken any prereqs (A&P 1 &2, Micro, Psych etc.) and from the way they describe the selection process (they say it's just numbers - full GPA and SAT scores) I stand a decent chance. I haven't taken these classes so my first semester schedule would be Nursing Fundamentals (8 credit hours), AP1 (4 hours) and Medical Terminology (1 hr) ... possibly college math (3 hrs) too, but I think I can get transfer credit for that. Is it suicide to try this? I mean, obviously it's not impossible since it's THEIR program, but is it crazy to actually do? Is that their attempt to weed out? Also, I have a toddler that I will have to care for evenings and weekends. So nursing students, what do you think? I am in a hurry b/c I HATE my current job and it's a contractor position so it could end in the blink of an eye. Also, more importantly, I am almost 33 and would like to expand my family. The sooner I finish NS, the sooner I can do this. If I put things off too long, it could be too late. My hubby is in his forties and the older he gets the more relucant he is to discuss a second (or third LOL) child. Please give me your feedback. Thanks!

Not crazy at all! :)

here's my personal experience....

I turned in my nursing application April 09. I graduated high school May 09. I started nursing school August 09. So I did not have all of my prereqs. BUT, I did take a&p1 & my math credit in the summer before I started nursing school. I got the english, chemistry, and history credits out of the way in high school. First semester of nursing I took Fundamentals, Pharmacology, Health Assessment, and A&P2. -crazy semester, but doable. I still have other basics to finish, but I'm glad the a&p is over!

Just stay focused, one of the most hardest lessons that I learned last semester was time management. Know how to divide up your study time between subjects, family time, and social time.

It seems like you are pretty determined, I'm loving that attitude! :) Just have faith, study, & know when to put the books down & just get some sleep (my favorite part! lol)

GOOD LUCK & BEST WISHES!

Can you get in? You might.

But is it in YOUR best interest? Maybe not. Get some of the pre-reqs done. At my school this could take 2 semesters itself. Then you're not starting at a disadvantage when nursing school classes begin.

I got in before finishing half my pre-req's. At first I was like "ooo look at me I am so smart they let me in early" Now reality has set in and it's more like "how will fit in these other classes when the nursing dept schedule is so erratic? And when clinical can't be rescheduled to accommodate my desire to take Sociology this semester?" I'll be doing 1-2 classes this summer to catch up and possibly squeezing in 1-2 as online format. It's a pain. And depending on the school, if there's a schedule conflict, you may delay graduation if you can't fit everything in on time. The last thing you need is more stress when you're starting nursing school.

How will u pay your bills after u quit your job? This is not an option for most non traditional nursing students. I always wonder how people plan to support themselves when they quit work to go back to school.

Unless you are doing an accelerated 2nd degree BSN, it is very feasible to work. At the hospital I work at, almost every single tech is a full time nursing student with a full time job at the hospital.

I'm quitting my job to go back to school. I have a ton of transfer credit hours so I'll only be part time. I intend to still work full time.

take anatomy 1 & 2 during the summer..... Its fast paced but totally doable. It will make less stress during nursing 1

I have quite a bit planned from now until August. CLEP for Psych & Sociology, CNA class (must), study for TEAS (must) and try to take A&P 1 (has to be a 2 part class). Oh yeah... and CPR (must).

That sounds like a very manageable load to me. I wouldn't stress it.
