Can an RN in California start an IV with out additional certification? Is it included in the RN scope of practice if practiced in nursing school?
Thanks in advance for your insight:twocents:

The answer is yes as long as you are competent you can. Some healthcare facilities may require and additional certification either through their own process and training or a community based certification... The bottom line IS...you are still responsible for what you do..Hope that helps

IV therapy is within the RN scope of practice. If an RN does not feel competent with this skill, they can obtain extra training in an IV therapy course but will not be awarded CEU credit for the course. LVNs in CA must be certified in IV therapy before being allowed to perform IV skills with some limitations.
