Hi, after months and months of searching, I'm finally starting my first nursing job on the first of June. I got medsurg, although wanted to be in ED. I never liked medsurg, but I have told to myself, it is doesn't matter where to work, as long as I'm given an oppotunity to be a nurse. I want to be a nurse more than anything else in the world. I want to learn and to be a very good nurse. I'm excited, but also very scared that I wouldn't be able to measure up, to learn quickly, to keep up, to keep my job. I have been reading many of the posts posted by a new nurses. They don't help, just scare me more. How do I overcome anxiety? What do I do to learn and not to be scared? How can I become a good nurse, who loves her job and self-confident and extremely organized?

Congratulations on your new job. I am a new grad also. I have been precepting for 5 weeks and I am doing very well. I work on an adult Neuroscience floor and we get alot of stroke, brain tumors, spinal surgeries and about 25% overflow of medsurg. You will be afraid in the beginning but as your practice and build your skills, things will get better. You are there to learn and develop your skills. They are not gonna expect for you to know everything. Just go in with a great attitude and you will be fine.

You already have a good attitude! You are willing to learn! That's a huge step. There are some new grads who have real chips on their shoulders and aren't willing to be taught ANYTHING outside of the box.
My suggestion? Find a nurse who has been working medsurg for awhile and allow her to be your mentor. Ask lots of questions. Take notice of the nurses who really seem to get the job done and when you have opportunity, watch what they do. Peek over their shoulders.
Don't be afraid to voice your concerns to another nurse. Most are pretty helpful with acclaimating a new nurse. I know there is a saying that nurses eat their young. You are always going to run into a nurse who isn't willing to help you. Don't take it personally. Keep your head up and do the very best you can. You'll get noticed for your positive attitude! That goes a LONG way! :)
Congrats on the new job!
