Starting my very first hospital job

Published

I am starting my very first hospital job next month in telemetry unit and I am very excited and at the same time nervous and anxious. I have some worries, first is that I am a foreign educated nurse, I am worried that our clinical when I was in school is different here in the US, second is that I graduated 2008 that is 6 years ago and a lot has changed for sure since the last time I step in the hospital and I forgot most of it already. In my interview the unit manager told me that they will give me 6 weeks training including classroom training and if they feel like I need a little bit more time they will give me an extra 2 weeks of training so that is total of 8 weeks. Can you guys give me some tips or advice on how I can survive this. I know I am stressing out already and I have not started yet. I bought ekg books since I will be working in telemetry unit. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

You would not have been hired if they didn't think you were qualified, so congratulations!!!

When I started orientation, I was given a bunch of online courses to take, classroom orientation, and a HUGE binder with information. I would guess it is standard to do that. Read everything you can, and take notes. Once on the floor, do not be afraid to ask questions, no one will mind answering them.

You will be great!

Thank you for that advice About scaredsilly. I am very excited and anxious at the same time, I hope the senior nurses will be understanding that I am new and don't really have any experience except my clinical in when I was in school which was 6 yrs ago.

Hi feofeo! Congratulations on getting the job. I am a foreign graduate nurse as well. Im having a hard time looking for a job. If you dont mind, in what hospital will you be working?

thanks

Hi About moki9204 I guess it depends on where you live in finding a job, I know some state in the west like SD, ND, NE is in need of nurses. I live in GA, what state do you live and you do live in the city?

I just started a job on a telemetry unit and I can relate to your excitement and anxiety. I have to keep telling myself that I can only do what I can do TODAY. They understand that we are new nurses and don't expect us to know everything on the first day. Just take it one day at a time. You will learn as you go. I was SO nervous about ECGs. I bought an ECG book which has been helpful and I watch the ECG course on Youtube which has helped as well.

I was very nervous before I got on the floor - but now that I'm on the floor, I'm feeling much better about the situation. I think it was the fear of the unknown that made me so anxious.

You will be fine - don't be afraid to ask questions. I've found that the people on my floor are so nice and helpful so far. They are happy to answer questions and help out.

Good luck!!

good for you About OneHappyRN I just got done with my first week on the floor and it was overwhelming my first 2 days on the floor I got a terrible headache maybe from being overwhelm I don't know. I bought books too and will brush up on a lot of stuff.
