Starting a business

Hi Guys! I am interested in starting a home based business but not in nursing. I've had this idea in my head for several years but don't have any idea on how to start. I want to sell scrubs. My idea is to go office to office, to local hospitals offering scrubs at very competitive prices. I live in a small but growing town wiht only one uniform shop and their choices are very limited and overpriced, and in a location hard to find. I've always had a knack for selling and would love to be able to be home more for my son. I work in a medical office now and we all complain about not having access to scrubs that aren't expensive and without having to travel to get them or order them. I'm getting ready to learn how to use my sewing machine and would like to design and make my own scrubs. I have the potential and the desire I just don't know where to start, literally. I know I can start in my home and know I can get the business by going from door to door so to speak and getting the word out by mouth. It's my opinion that scrubs can be bought from wholesalers pretty cheap. If anyone has any insight, please email me or respond. Thanks in advance.:)

Some cities are really strict on home businesses. Hubby and I had a small home health /hospice consulting company. I don't do that anymore as I was on the road all the time. I loved it though.

Do you know how to build a website? My son does that and he is excellent. PM if you want to email him.

Good luck and good idea!

I would start by:

1) checking out the rules and/or restrictions in your area (business license, zoning, etc.)

2) contacting (on letterhead) several companies that manufacture scrubs and offering to include them in your marketing/sales

3) contacting wholesalers (on letterhead) to see whether they might be interested in your marketing their products.

It is VERY unlikely that you could make much money designing AND sewing AND marketing scrubs yourself, since they are usually made in countries where people work for $1-2/day. Your labor can not compete with that, for sure.

Good luck.

maia1212: I have an idea for a scrub pant and I can't sew worth a darn. I'd like to PM you with my idea...perhaps you could let me know what you would charge. Come on over to the Nurse Entrepreneur Forum and share your ideas with us. While you are not thinking in terms of actual nursing, your desires are related to nursing industry. I'll get my PM off to you tomorrow. Thanks!

Peace,

Yes, please come to the nurse entrepreneur forum. You will fit right in.

If you offer a good product, and making them you will, then price stops being an issue. You are talking about a unique service by selling door to door so to speak. It is not often we get the sales man to come to our location with the produce.

Don't let anyone shoot down your vision. IT IS GOOD AND IT IS VIABLE.
