betcha you could have done a bs-in-anything-to-mn program, or at least an Accelerated BSN, in the same amount of time it will take you to get the asn. maybe it's not too late to get in to one of those... good luck!!
glad to see you here!
Start the ADN program and apply to an Accelerated BSN if available in your area. If you don't get into the BSN stay with the ADN. Yes it is easier for a BSN to get a job in some areas. No your BS in biochemistry won't help, will help you get into a BSN program. Employers want first, experience, second BSN and then ADN.
Its hard enough getting into an ADN program. I needed another five classes to even apply for the Accelerated BSN. I too have a BS already I'm goin for an ADN. I'm not sure about the MSN programs that allow you to start with different degree. Most NP programs i have seen require a BSN first. Can you still be a NP with something like that. I thought u can only do nurse educator, public health. I don't have a problem going back for the BSN later. I think in this economy most people will have a hard time finding a job. I would rather have a foot in the door. An RN is and RN. :-) goodluck
No, it wont help.
I also have a BS (but in Health Science) and am about to enter my last semester of an ADN program. The last thing I wanted to have was two Bachelor degrees worth of debt.
Every hospital that I have contacted hires ADN grads. The magnet hospitals that I've spoken with want ADN grads to have their BSN's within five or so years of hiring, but even then they offer tuition assistance.
Good Luck!
Wow. Thank you all so much for the helpful comments and encouragement.
I appreciate the warm welcome, GrnTea.
Thank you for that input on hiring priorities, Robublind.
MommyRNtobe, I looked that up just now and I would be in the same boat having to take extra classes. I would have to retake Micro (blegh!!!) for one, because it's been more than 10yrs.
Starmickey, the cost of a B.S. these days scares the tar out of me, too. Boy, has the cost skyrocketed since I graduated in '04, and it's going to keep going up.
I am very happy and grateful to begin this program. I'll keep my eye on the horizon.
Thank you all. My best to you!

Hello AN gals and guys,
I decided to post this question because I have read/heard so much about the advantages of having a BSN as opposed to an ADN. I'll be starting nursing school next week and I'm very, very excited. The fact that it's not a BSN program never gave me a second thought, until recently, since I have heard that BSNs are overwhelmingly preferred in the job market. I have a B.S. in Biochemistry. Do you think this will give me any advantage in landing a job? I like the idea of RN-BSN bridge, but not right away. I just need to get back to work ASAP.
Thanks and Happy New Year to all.
