how to stand out at job fair?

Published

Hi all... I know NYC is saturated with new and experienced nurses looking to find employment. As a new grad nurse with no experience, how can I make myself stand out at a job fair? Would you suggest going the extra mile to make personal business cards? How can I make a memorable impression so the nurse recruiters there remember my face and name? Thanks for ur advice~

Dress professionally. You'd be shocked at the crap people wear to job fairs!

If you don't have a tasteful dark suit and some bold, colorful scarves/ties (depending on your gender) to wear with it, now is the time to invest.

Having a portfolio to show off can really help. Having a list of references, letters of rec, your transcripts, license, BLS card, etc make the job of HR a lot easier and they tend to like that :). Also, look into who will be there ahead of time and research them so you can approach them and be able to speak specifically about why you want to work there.

I too am an unemployed new grad so I must ask, is there a career fair coming up?

I completely agree. Having been on the "other side" of the recruiting booth at many events over the years, a well put together candidate always makes a memorable impression. A confident approach - introducing yourself, making eye contact and shaking hands is always a good start (has this gone out of fashion??). Be ready with a brief "elevator speech" about yourself and what you're looking for. Have some extra copies of your resume to leave with the recruiter. Collect the recruiters' cards - ask for one if they are not readily available. Afterward, send a nice thank you/acknowledgement to the recruiter(s) and remind them that you are very interested in what they can offer.

This will differentiate you (in a very positive way) from the usual lookie-loos at job fairs that seem to have just wandered in on their way to somewhere more interesting.

Best of luck to you. Go Get 'Em!!!
