Staffing agency?

Published

Hey guys, I really need a full-time job. I've been at 32 hours at a local jail for over a year now and also work at a nursing home every other Sat. I need to make at least 2-300 more a month as I'm not even breaking even now and I have not been paying my student loan either, which is in deferment and that's gonna be another 250 or so more when I start paying it again. I thought I was going to get the FT position as a FT lady quit because she got a better offer. I guess they decided to hire an RN instead and even cut another nurses hours as the company is trying to cut their budget and we can't work any OT anymore. Anyway, I've been applying to local nursing homes and hospitals but nobody is hiring-at least for FT. So I started applying online to surrounding cities and even prisons in the state. I got a call a couple weeks ago about a prison job, but she never called back after I filled out the app. It was a good 3-4 hour drive though so it probably was too far anyway. At this point I would even consider moving if I could get a FT position that paid at least 16/hr. btw, the main reason for my thread was I must have applied to a job that went through a staffing agency as I got a message from a lady from Sunbelt Staffing. She said they may have a job. This was about a week ago. I keep trying to call and it goes to her answering machine, so I leave a message. Then she calls back and asks if I'm still interested or not. I don't know what the deal is. I'm not sure where this place is located and thinking maybe its too far away and she must have a cell and that's why she is not answering. Any ideas how to get a hold of her or any other staffing places I might try? I'm not worried about benefits at this point, just decent pay so I can get caught up on bills a little.

Hey, maybe you should even look into PRN work at nursing facilities... I just took a PRN position (even though I wanted full time), but I proved myself worthy by my second day of work and they gave me full time.

Worth a shot!

Yeah, I applied for a couple PRN positions last week, but have'nt heard anything yet. Anyways, the lady from the staffing agency finally called when I was home. No wonder I had trouble reaching her as I found out she is out of Florida. She says there may be some jobs available, but I would most likely have to move to where they are at. She's going to try in Ohio first. I guess I would'nt have a problem moving (although who really wants to) if the pay was right and it was a good, permanent job. Problem is it looks like most of their jobs are like traveling positions and temp to hire, like 13 week assignments. I don't think I would want to sell the house and move accross the country if I was'nt sure they would hire me full-time. Plus she wants me to send references (it says 10 or more preferred), and I will be hard-pressed to come up with 3-4. I could use a couple from the job I just got let go from. I would hope the DON would give me a good reference even though my last review was'nt the greatest. But I don't know if I should use any from my current part-time job since I don't really work with any other nurses except for report at the beg. and end of the shift and the lady that trained me does'nt work there any more. I wonder if I could use my preceptor at my last school clinical from almost 2 years ago and maybe a teacher? I don't know if its a good idea to pursue this staffing company or continue to look around here and pick up hours when I can at the nursing home? At least I have unemployment for now.

Last night I worked my first 3rd shift and it was pretty busy because they passed a new admit off to our shift and that took half the night. If it was'nt for that it looks like it will be pretty laid-back. But I don't think I'm gonna like sleeping all afternoon. Today I woke up at 3 and was planning on sleeping until 5 to get close to 8 hours sleep. I hope you can adjust to it if you work the hours more regular...

Do some reading on this site and you will see that traveling nurses are having their assignments cancelled left and right. I certainly wouldn't pick up and move based on a traveling nurse job that might be gone in the wind before you get to the hospital. Better to continue trying to get per diem or part time work nearby. Good luck.

I'm still trying to decide if I should apply to the staffing job? I might email or call her first to find out if they are all travel positions or if there are some temp-to-hire positions. btw, I applied to what I thought was a fairly close job last night. The lady called and left a message this morning wanting to set up an interview. So I checked out how far it was on yahoo maps and it says 53 miles or approx 1.25 hour drive. I was going to at least check it out, but my mom said why bother since it will be too far unless I end up moving closer. I did hear about another place hiring for PT and FT that is about 30 miles away. I think I'll try there on monday since my car is getting worked on tomorrow.
