St. Paul's School of Nursing - Spring 2015

Published

Hey everyone, I'm new to the site.

I've recently taken the HESI at SPSON, I got an overall 91%. I'm planning to go to the evening classes if I get accepted. The next step is the interview with the President of the school? Anyone else applying to SPSON?

Hi how are you? I see everyone has questions. Well not sure on what campus you are going to attend, but I am at the one in Staten Island they are both pretty much the same. I see a lot of people stating things that are both true and untrue. For starter not only 100 people get in and not 1000 people register. Even if many people do register the reason why the acceptance rate is so low is because they are including people who failed there Hesi. Now if you passed your Hesi and background check, and also have your CPR and physical in you are good. Even if you don't have your CPR they have a class on campus. Another thing yes they do call you for the acceptance if its close to starting time. If you have been waiting...... call them, beg them!!! call everyday! most people get in. Nights are best! get your self a friend in the morning class too, once you start classes you will understand why I said that. so when you are at orientation mingle and exchange numbers with them. If anyone has any questions feel free to email me [email protected] I'm really cool with a lot of people and maybe I can check on your delay. I am going into my second semester and did very well in the first. I can give pointers on how to study and what to study. just here to help. I was right in your place a few months ago waiting and wondering and doubting and driving myself insane. DONT be patient!!! call!!! check with your intake person. express how much this means to you. Good luck everyone!!!

One of the things that bother me is that apparently the students are constantly being lied to by the school regarding exams and other things. I have heard of this many times from different people. Also, that the professors quit all the time and leave the students pretty much helpless with a different professor with a totally different teaching style and agenda. That is definitely not in the students best interest. I´m willing to deal with it as long as I get a good education that prepares me for the NCLEX. But I´m sure that much be very frustrating and annoying for anyone.

Your right!!! Never heard of Prof quitting but I have seen clinical teachers quit. What campus are you attending? And yes can be unorganized. I have a lot of study material for your first semester. Ummmmm yes they are all over the place. Exams dates are always changing and teachers sometimes DONT follow the syllabus. Don't read too much ahead. I will say they listen to your concerns please don't keep quiet it something is bothering you. Congrats on getting in. Do u have medical background ? Your best option is to do NCLEX style questions for each topic your text is on. Reading the book won't get you the answers. I was reading the book and was getting 70's and started doing questions and now my lowest grade is a 88. I wish there was someone like me when I was starting to help me. 2nb 3rd and 4th semseter students think they are better (most of them) they fail to realize we all start from the same. Clincial experience is a joke!!! But over all you are ther to be able to sit for your RN NCLEX eveything else you we need to learn is after you graduated. All u have to do is pass the exams!! Record shows 30 percent fails out and another 20 drop. Be proud and if you need anything from first semester please let me know. Queens and Staten Island run all the same. I am in Staten Island. Good luck everyone one.

Which campus are u all attending? I'm in my second semester at the Rego Park campus. If you're attending the campus in queens, i look forward to meeting all of you.

How is the second semester ? I'm going into my second semester in Jan

To be honest it was quite rough because the school made us retake our first exam half way through the semester and clinicals got messed up too. So instead of doing peds and medsurg clinicals on wed and thursday at Brookdale, we ended up doing 12 hr medsurg clinicals on saturdays at flushing and peds on wednesday at Lincoln in the Bronx. On top of that we have to come back after school is over to finish making up clinical hours. Other than that its fine. Next semester will be a little harder for you guys because they are treating Peds and medsurg as two separate classes (hence two exams) with our class the medsurg and peds professors came together and combined the info to make one exam. make sure you're comfortable with ADPIE because you will use it for ever disease you're taught. And PLEASE understand the pathophysiology behind each disease, it will make answering the questions sooo much easier.

Thanks so much!!! Well congrats on ur success. We lost so many ppl this first semester. 2 of the girls I got close to failed. One thing is the schools are very unorganized. We had a big Prob with clinicals too, also exams were either pushed back or moved up. But I'm making it thru pretty good.

12 hours on Saturdays ? what happens if you can't make it those times ? That sounds intense and very frustrating. is it like that all the time with the clinical hours ?

If you can't make those times they will work with you and put you with another group of students. We just

Got the short end of the stick because out clinical instructor quit and they had trouble finding someone to replace at the last minute. But if you attend St. Pauls, clinicals will be the lease of your worries.

What would you say is the most difficult part about nursing school, regardless of the schools administration problems. Clinicals? Studying? Memorization? Time management? Material? What do you absolutely need to survive nursing school?

The studying!! It's time consuming. I started school working full time and dropped to part time after once month and now I am not even working at all. Studying all day type ****. I took 6 classes. I know they are changing it for this semseter giving you guys 5 semesters instead of 4. Not sure if I would like being forced to go in the summer. The material to me was easy, but I am an LPN which helps. A lot of ppl stuggled. Answering the nursing questions for hard for people because the answer doesn't come from the book. It's deeper then that. You will have little time for yourself!! Be prepared to give your life to nursing...... It all pays off. Look up your prof's of "rate me prof.com" see how to study for their exams. Ask students that took their classes. Ask students how they studied. Do ur research. You will be fine. Google questions on each topic. For example "NCLEX style questions on urinary. Because in nursing there is always 2 answrs. A correct answer and a nursing correct answer. And these type of questions will help you answer them as a nurse not just a student. Questions is how u should study!! I promise u! Get on ATI and do your evolve. Don't be afraid to ask for a study guide, most teachers give them. Don't be afraid to ask for website to practice. Get a nclex book for Barnes and noble. Be dedicated and u will make it. If u are really dedicated and go above and beyond u will do fine. I will say this for most that fail didn't try every outlet! Not that thy werent trying cause all do!!! But please look for everything possible to help. Just listeninin in class an reading the chapter won't help.... PS befriend a few ppl from the next semester they will help you

Has anyone else heard back yet? I think I'm going to call today

I just called and they're going through the applicants files as we speak- the admissions person I spoke to told me that the hold up was because they added the summer session and they need to finalize the documents for that. They're going to be calling people everyday - but by the end of this week everyone will have been notified.
