Hello All,
I was wondering if anyone was applying to SPSON for the fall 2014. I went to their open house and took the entrance exam. I will be submitting my application soon then taking the hesci exam. I was curious to know if there was anyone out here doing the same ?
Hi Ladies..just wanted to share some information I learned today. First and foremost good luck to everyone applying to SPSON for Fall 2014. Hope we all make it.
Ok first and foremost SPSON is not NLN accredited. I asked admissions today and I was told No. They have NLN membership and I believe they are a candidate for NLN accreditation. I was also told by a current SPSON student that the admissions process is tougher now because they want to have a higher NCLEX passing rate which in turn will help them with their NLN accreditation. They are however licensed and recognized by NYS Higher Ed. Upon graduating you can sit for the NLCEX and get a job as an RN. It is a little tricky getting a job in most hospitals with just an associate but as I mentioned in a last post, I would recommend volunteering , and building relationships while in school. I was also told today that its always a good idea to build relationships with some of the nurses while in clinicals and make sure you leave a good impression because that can also help you get a job. So while it might be tricky to get a job with an Associate Degree its not impossible.
Finally in terms of transferring to a BSN program- most schools like Walden or Chamberlain will accept SPSON credits with no problem but they too also lack NLN accreditation. If one were to be interested in a more traditional school like Molloy, Adelphi or NYU. It would be best to contact the school directly and find out what they will or will not accept. For example, I called Adelphi University and I was told that they have plenty of students that come from SPSON to complete their BSN only thing is they accept SPSON Nursing classes only. So the AP , Micro or any core classes that comes from SPSON would have to be taken over again. Hunter College requires that you take a challenge exam in nursing before being admitted in the program. Every school is different.
I read a thread here on all nurses that sums up very nicely what I researched and found out today. As I have more information I'll pass it along so everyone can make an informed decision or at least know what they are signing up for.
Hope this helps.
First I want to Thank bkmom for posting this because I did some research and basically found out what you said. I didn't post it yet because I wanted to make sure it was accurate. This post really confirmed things. when I had my interview, I ask the president about NLN accreditation, he told me they DON'T have NLN accreditation but they have others such as NYSED AND ABHES. (Found on pg 59 on school catalog). I've read forums that said they are accredited and if you go on the link you will see SPSON on the list but they are not yet. The name is there because they are candidate to become, hopefully in the next two years.I also called NYS department of education and they told me that SPSON has licensing authority with them, they do have license to give the nursing program and you can sit for NCLEX. Once you are licensed You can also practiced out of state. When it comes to BSN, a student told me that there are at least four online school that takes SPNON credits. Chamberlain, excelsior and I forgot the other two. It's nice to hear that Adelphi takes their nursing credits, (shows they are legit). If you took the pre- reqs at a different school like a local college, they should get transffered. Every school is different we just need to find the right one. Ladies like I said before and like BKMOM restated, market yourself from the beginning, make relationship, participated and most of all PRAY and there is nothing we can not conquer. WE CAN DO IT!!!
P.S @bkmom.. What Adelphi told you really gave me more hope that I can pursue to BSN.
Keeping us in prayer.
