St. Louis Community College

U.S.A. Missouri

Is there anyone out there who is attending or did attend St. Louis Community College, Meramec campus to be more specific? I have taken all of my non-nursing classes, and I was wondering what kind of time commitment I am looking at for the nursing classes? Is it all day, M-F or more like half days? I have kids, so I am considering my child care options and whether going to nursing school is even going to work for me. Any info about STLCC is greatly appreciated!

Yes, wdwpixie is right. Micro isnt required until 3rd semester. I have put it off and am taking it this summer, before 3rd semester in the fall. I did it this way so that I would have nothing but nursing classes first and second semester.

Have you hit all local hospitals? They seem to love to hire nursing students(even pre-nursing students)as unit secretaries or patient care techs. I know of several students who got hired at Barnes & SLU hospitals as patient care techs before we started first semester. Just emphasize your interest in becoming an RN and that you are completing required coursework for the ASN. It seemed to work for them. GOOD LUCK!

Well, I got accepted to Chamberlain but I am not feeling very excited now; relieved, but not excited. I am sooooo  . I know it will be extremely hard for me to quit my job and go to STLCC because we have sooo many bills, ie 2 car loans, etc. I would really rather go to STLCC but, hum, I don't know. Whatever, I'm in :stone .

Does Chamberlain allow you to go part time? I didnt realize that. It's a difficult decision any way you slice it. Good luck NikNik!

Yes, I have most of the pre-reqs done so for me, it is part-time. Its a 3 semester program and there are roughly 6 - 9 nursing credit hrs per semester.

Thanks, we'll see how it goes!

Update...I am NOT going to Chamberlain.

hey i'm definitely going to be offered a spot for the fall of 09 nursing program at forest park, but there is a possiblity i may also have a seat for spring 09. I still have to take anatomy 2 and microbiology. I really dont want to take my pre-reqs with my nursing classes. If i do end up going spring of 09 how many credits would they make me take??....i'm so confused as to wat to do. please help...

They will make you take the ENTIRE first semester nursing core -- if I'm not mistaken it's "only" 9 units on paper, but is pretty intense.

There were several in my class finishing up prereqs that first and second semester and they were miserable that they hadn't gotten them done beforehand.

One option, if you can stand the wait, is to ask for a deferral to the following semester, get those classes out of the way and then have a clean slate for the nursing program.

Good luck!!

They would make you take the nursing course as WDpixie said, plus A&PII. Micro you could put off and take in the summer or fall...you have to have micro prior to starting third semester classes. If you want to double check the info, or if they have made any changes since I started school call Cecelia Hyde in Admissions. She could tell you.

I did not go to the community college because they wanted me to retake chem and biology again since it was over 10 years old. I was bummed because it was WAY cheaper than the school I went to. I already had another degree and just really did not want to take those classes over and be placed on a waiting list for two years. I would have been able to start fall of this year at Forest Park. I applied at another school that took everything and started right away and I am done now. But I know that the stlcc program is very good and I know alot of nurses that went to one of the programs. If they would have taken my science classes and had a shorter waiting list I would have gone there. The clinical students on my floor from Forest Park are great.

Take my advise you do not want to take your pre-reqs with your nursing classes. Nursing classes and I am sure this is true of all nursing schools are intense and consume a lot of your time. You do not want to be worried with pre-reqs while taking them. See if you can get deferred until the next semester and get A&P and Micro out of the way.
