St. Kate's Lifespan Development course

U.S.A. Minnesota

Published

Hi - has anyone taken this course at St. Kate's? I'm just curious to know if it is a challenge and what's all involved. I'm thinking of taking it with nutrition this spring but I'm not sure if I should take nutrition at the same time...any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your response!

Hi Toots,

I'm in this course now, and I am really enjoying it (though we're only two classes in). I'm not sure if the professor is the same each year, but i really like the professor this semester. The work seems very manageable right now. There is about 60-120 pages of reading between each class (some classes are every other Saturday; some are back to back Saturdays), a project and two take home exams.

I'm not sure how Nutrition is set up, but I would feel comfortable taking another course along with Lifespan, so I think you'd be just fine.

Thanks for the information. The exams are take home? Interesting! I'll be curious to find out once you have an exam how hard it is. I'll probably email you in a month or so... The nutrition class is online so I'm thinking that would be manageable then! Thanks a bunch!

Hi,

I took Develop Psych at STK, also in the WEC format. I had a different prof and my tests weren't take home. But overall the class was not that bad and the book wasn't necessary. My prof taught from powerpoint slides and the book was just in case students needed more clarification on an issue/ topic.

I also took nutrition separately at STK. But it was during the summer session (one month of class every Mon-Thurs). Again it was doable.

I think you should be able to manage both classes at the same time.

Good Luck!

I have taken both at St Kates (am doing semester 1 of nursing classes now)

Both are manageable, nutrition especially is fairly easy. I got a B+ without putting much effort in at all. The psych is pretty easy...the study-guides for the test are the kind that you can just go through the chapter in the book, look for the bold words, and just write down the definitions. Pay attention to the Erikson stages in lifespan. You will NEED to know these for nursing (really about the only thing from that class you really need to remember, lol.)

Toots,

I got your PM, but I can't send PMs since I don't have enough posts yet. But the Lifespan course turned out great. The tests were take home tests and were really easy if you take good notes. Make sure to attend every class because a lot of stuff he discusses is not in the book. We also had to write a paper, which was three pages double spaced. Very simple. I would absolutely recommend taking this course. It involved a minimal amount of time and effort, but I felt like I learned a lot and it was really enjoyable. The professor is an entertaining professor.

let me knoe if there's anything else you'd like to know!

Hi, can you tell me the name of the prof. and what campus. Thanks

St. Paul Campus. I can't post the name of the professor on here (allnurses rules). Just go on St. Kate's website and look up who taught the weekend course last semester.

I went to nursing school at St. Kate's (2004 grad). This course was listed on the Minnesota transfer curriculum (probably still is) so you could take it at any MN school and it will automatically transfer. I took it over the summer at MCTC and saved about $1,100. Just something for you to consider.

Yes, that's very true. Although now St. Kate has changed their requirements so that if you are already accepted to the post bac nursing program and have agreed to attend, you must agree to complete all additional coursework at St. Kate. We were talking about this in another class the other day, and another student mentioned this is a relatively new requirement.
