St Joseph Medical Center Phoenix AZ

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hello to all, this is my first time on this site, so bear with me. I am considering a position as a night Supervisor at St Joseph Medical Center. I will potentially be working 3 12 hour shifts every week and 1/ 8hr shift everyother week. This is a salaried position. The assigned area is MICU, SICU, TICU. Can anyone out there tell me anything about this hospital system and or the area in question. Thank you Kateskards in Texas

Awesome!!

Im not too worried about the area as long as there is safe parking. Im not into worrying about being mugged walking to the garage. Here in Cincy some of our hospitals arent in the greatest area but they do have awesome security. Childrens where I am now, there is a shuttle to the locked/gated garage and it drops you right off at your car and he waits for you to get in so that you are safe.

I don't plan on living downtown Phoenix. Most likely i'll live in Tempe. How long do you think it will take to get from Tempe to St. Joe's? Barring no traffic as i'll prob work 3rd shift, or atleast I want to!:):) Thanks for the info!

Actually, the commute shouldn't be too bad, maybe 30 minutes max. I assume you will be driving at hours that are less busy. I live in NE Scottsdale and commute to Phoenix Children's more than 25 miles away and it takes about 45 mintues. But it also take me about 30 minutes to Tempe, so I think that kind of communte would be good. There are some lovely (and somewhat expensive) homes in central Phoenix, just a few miles north of St. Joe's. When you get closer to a move, ask us about where you are thinking of living and all of us locals can help out with the good, bad and the ugly about the area you are considering. I can tell you that I will definitely look into St. Joe's when it is time for me to look for a job, even with the commute!

I work at Joes currently, and I personally love it here. What really stood out to me is their benefits package. They have excellent health coverage, which is free to the employee. They've also just decided to do a market adjustment, and our pay will be going up depending on experience (I'll get 4.00/hr more with one year exp.)

There are currently three different patient care areas of the hospital, with between 500-550 beds total. Main has 5 floors, Tower has 8 floors, and BNI has five floors. They're also expanding the hospital (the ER will double it's size from 30 or so beds to nearly 70), and that section is due to open in July of this year, making us the biggest in AZ.

Working in NeuroICU should be a challenge, we see patients from all over the world, and we have a great research program in stroke care. I came from OK, and I'm glad that I did. I now live in Avondale, and my commute is about 30 minutes.

We aren't magnet, but we were voted as top hospital to work in the valley for a few years now. If you have any particular questions, PM me.

Edited to add: I work with a few LPN's as well, not sure if Joes is actively hiring them.

Thanks for the info! I am so excited. The lady I spoke to on the phone today also said t hey are trying to set up a loan forgiveness/repayment program. Good for people like me who have a significant amount of loans to pay off. She said it hadnt been implimented yet but if I started in Aug. I would be eligiable. I want to get it in writing before I accept the position. I am nervous about working in the ICU but she says thats where they need the most help. I like that you only have 1 patient. I like spending a lot of time with my patients even if they are more critical. The 16 week training program should help though. I only wish they had sign on bonuses...I looked into anohter hospital in Scottsdale but I really really like that St. Joe's has such a variety of floors and s uch a great rep. Eventually I think i'd like to switch to peds and I like that fact that I can do that at the same hospital!

BTW what do you guys think about the areas around St. Joes, I have found some apts. that are within walking distance, not that I would walk since i'll prob be working night shift.? Anyone heard of Forest Park Apts? lol they look nice in the apartmentguide book:)

This sounds like a great opportunity and from everything I have heard, I think it is a good hospital. I would not recommend living around there:devil: , it is NOT a good neighorhood at all. However you head a little north, around Central Ave and up to about 16th St. and find some really nice places that are very close to work. Couldn't walk but could take a bus or have a short drive. Anywhere between Highland Dr. and Bethany Home Rd. (those streets are about 1-2 miles north of Thomas) and between 12th-18th St. Be sure it is St., not Ave. BIG difference! Nice apts. in the 16th St./Highland area!

The area I described is close to the 51 freeway, which can pretty easily get one to the airport or into Tempe. The Biltmore/Camelback corridor is very high end stuff, at least at it relates to homes/condos, not sure what the apts. go for. It is VERY nice there, with lots of shopping, restaurants, theatres etc. in close proximity. Just slightly west of there, which is the 12th-16th Street area I mentioned affords you with close proximity to this area, without quite the high prices. Also not far from the 51, which you can take to Thomas (St. Joe's), airport and Tempe for ASU. If I were in your shoes, that is where I would be looking.

Hi, I have a question. I am moving from california to phoenix soon. I wanted to work in a hospital that is dealing with less infectious disease as possible. The hospital in california that I worked for had a high drug population and there was a lot of infectious disease. I kind

of wanted to stay away from that since I had a couple of bad expericence where I am being tested for a bunch of things because I was stabbed with a needle. Which hospital do you reccommend and what about St. Joes?

Not really sure what you mean by finding a hospital with "less infectious disease" .... ?

St. Joes is the biggest hospital in the state of AZ, with almost 600 beds now. They get patients from all over the place. It's also right in the middle of downtown Phx, therefore they get a lot of low-income patients. If you worked there you'd probably see all kinds of things, including infectious diseases.

Do St. Joe's have a uniform policy? Can you wear any color you want, or is the RN assigned a certain color to wear? Also, do you know if they have tuition reimbursment, and if so, how much a year? And if you take tution reimbursement, is there a catch where you have to work for them for so long after wards, so a year or so?
