St. Johns Mercy

U.S.A. Missouri

Just wondering if anyone currently works or has worked at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center. I am new to the area and wondering how it is to work there. What are the working conditions/ambiance of the staff? I heard it is the only unionized hospital in the area. Is that a good thing? How's the pay, etc... Any info would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the area!!

I know nothing except my daughter has had 2 babies there, and a few of my MDs are there.

Hopefully you'll get some more responses soon!!

I would love to know as well. It's a hospital I've been thinking of working at after graduation(May 2008). Thanks for posting!

I have no direct information about St Johns but I have heard good things about it. I also heard that it has some of the highest paid nurses. That would probably be my first start when I begin applying for nursing jobs. I actually interviewed there for general clerical-type positions but turned down the job due to the pay. I just wanted to get my foot in the door at a hospital, but I couldn't afford such a drastic pay cut at that time. I believe they pay around $4000/yr for tuition. The staff was very nice as well.

I know this was not much but I hope it helps.....somewhat.

NikNik,

you seem to be the person to go to! My question is when you say $4000/year for tuition-is that if you are in school, or does St.John(or any other school) pay for loans I already have? Does that make sense? Once I graduate next year I will have about $40,000(ouch) in loans (knew this going into the programs though) between Maryville & Chamberlain-does any of our local hospitals repay this for us if we work for them? If so, how does that work?

thanks!

I understand most hospitals have tuition reimbursement of some sort as well as sign on bonuses, but I believe each institution has its own standards for this.

Hopefully folks with more specific knowledge than I will reply, but I think it will have to be something that you'll negotiate/discuss when applying for employment.

wdwpixie-you must be on the DIS boards too with a name like that:) guess we have two things in common then! Right now I have both boards open......I have addiction issues, haha

No actually not that, just a quiet house-my kids are in school and no babysitting kids today since I leave for clinical in a little while!

I can always tell other WDW addicts -- they're the ones that recognize my dual identity!!

Honestly, since I started school and quit work, I don't get to those boards often...we discussed using our tax return to schedule a trip, but we have household repairs that needed taken care of so no trip this year :o....my not working has put a real crimp in our Disney tripping much to our 19 year-old's consternation!! I'm thinking a trip to WDW would be a PERFECT graduation present to myself!!

Best wishes in your education....I read your other post....hang in there!!

WDW, we did the same thing-promised tax return would be for Disney......then life happens! I keep begging, but not sure if would have the time really. A graduation would be a great thing though........maybe I need to start the "talk" with DH.....haha

Thank you for your words, same to you-my 1st semester was difficult, but I think that was my fault too. I guess I assumed my study habits would not need to change. What was I thinking? This semester is much better, woohoo!

take care and good luck!!

I'm not 100% sure that they would pay back on previous student loans but the guy I interviewd with said he is actually going for an MBA and they are paying his tuition at 4000/year. St Johns doesn't offer business degrees so I would assume they pay tuition for any school while you are employed with them.

I currently work at SSM St. Josephs and I know they have some kind of loan forgiveness program as well as tutition reimbers. for further education. I don't know the details of the loan forgiveness but the recruiter I spoke with and human resources are all very helpful and nice. I was just wondering about St. Johns because I've always wanted to work at a big busy teaching hospital.

St. John's is a Catholic hospital - in my opinion, a very big plus. They are a major medical center and have about every specialty and service.

It's unionized, which is both good and bad.

They pay pretty well. I regret having left, in that regard.

There is no longer mandatory OT.

As for the tuition reimbursement, why not see what they might offer you when you apply. Best of luck.
