can anyone tell me anything about St Anthony's? I'm an RN and have an interview there in a couple weeks. Pay, benefits, environment, etc. ER is my specialty.
thanks!

I haven't heard a lot positive about St. Anthony's, but it's mostly grumblings and nothing concrete.
From a patient perspective, I hear a lot of people say they wouldn't go there if they were in their parking lot with a problem; they'd travel elsewhere. Guess it's a lack of confidence thing...I have also had a few people say they had terrific treatment when their relatives were patients there and they were quite pleased.
That being said, we had some students in school who worked there as techs and were taking positions as graduate nurses. We also had several other students from school considering it as a place to work.
I also heard they are working hard to improve their environment and their reputation in the community. They will have a little bit more local competition when SSM St. Clare opens their facility in 2009 so that may be the impetus for that.
Hopefully someone who truly knows more factual information can respond to your inquiry!! Good luck!!

A couple of weeks ago, I interviewed and got hired for PRN in the ER. I have worked in many trauma centers and live right across from the river at St Anthony's. However, I turned down my position even before I got out
of orientation. Here is what I found out...
1.) Horrible management. Parry Wors is the nurse manager of the ER, totally scattered brained. talks to staff in a very demeaning way.
2.) Not a needleless system. They are a trauma center and still use needles in IV therapy...
3.) 70% of staff are agency....very little staff
4.) Non-stop ER, very busy, lacks support staff.
5.) We had a skills day, which I was pumped about, because I was still in nursing orientation and this would be a way to meet people. ALL of the staff hated management and most were in the process of trying to find new job. And the manager basically just yelled at staff for not meeting the needs and expectations!!
This is just my experience....STAY AWAY. It is not good. The manager stated that since she has been there 6 months, they have had 3 death directly related to nurse-patient care in ER. Totally not a safe place to work..
However, let me know if you have a better experience

holy crap! Now I'm really scared...
however, the place where I work now is the same way. Non-stop, understaffed, poorly managed. Not uncommon to have over 100 patients in the dept at any given time and nurses with a 6+ patient load. I don't feel the place I work now is a safe place to work, either, and that is a big part of why i am leaving.
I was a patient at St Anthony's ER about a year ago, and I have to say that I left there with a good impression of the place. The waiting room is clean, when i was back in the room a tech came in and dressed my wound (never would happen in the place I work at now), it was busy but not insane.
What do you mean by a "needleless" system? Does that mean that the needle stays in the arm the whole time? I am confused.

I work for Saint Anthony's-in the Urgent Care as a tech. I work with a lot of nurses that came here from the ER and they said that the patient load has gotten really heavy there. Some used to work there PRN in addition to the UC but quit because it wasn't even worth the bonuses anymore!!
I love where I work and I had a great experience having my baby at St. Anthony's. But I wouldn't want to work in the ER....
(And by the way, St. Anthony's is now using needleless iv therapy......)

Well I can say that I was a patient there twice. And let me tell you if I knew then what I know now about how a patient should be treated and taken care of I would have sued their pants off.
Just a tid of my experience....Tuesday night show up to ER for terrible pain in my upper right quadrant..yep you guessed it my gal bladder,, man that crap hurts. Well I can't get surgery until Thursday so I am in the hospital a couple of days.
At 10am Thursday morning they come in to talk to me about signing consents...none of which that were explained to me and I wasnt a nursing student or even considering this career path yet so I just trusted them and signed. Get wheeled down to the surgery area....I was upset about everything and as the gal came in to start my drugs to knock me out she says to me where is your arm band...I was like huh? I never got one.
Ok so here I am on the table about to be cut open and they had no way to check who I was. I had been receiving drugs for 2 days and not one person asked who I was or confirmed anything.
Need less to say I began to FREAK OUT!! The nurse leaves (me alone, just so you know) as I am crying frantically and freaking out that I may end up one leg less and not one gall bladder less. She comes back puts on the bracelet didnt say two words crap to me and says here this will calm you down...did something to my IV and the next thing I remember I am waking up in my room a few hours later.
I doze back off and to wake up at aroun 5pm to have my dinner placed in front of me. Being that I have not gotten to eat a thing since I got there that Tuesday night I comminsed to SCARFFING and my husband freaked out because the surgeon said I could only have liquids to start with. We got into a huge fight cause I was starving..the nurse comes in and he begins to tell her the surgeon said no (honestly I dont know if it was the nurse or the food tray lady) but she walked out and then back to tell us that the order says regular food.
Ok so another (maybe Nurse) walks in and says Ill go call the doctor. She comes back and takes my food away. (hmmm hubby was right?). 15 minutes later it is now 5:30pm at this point and the (maybe nurse) comes in says get up and go pee. Just like that mind you. So i got up went pee then she came back with papers and said ok you can go home. I was still drowsy and in and out from the meds and began to cry saying Im not ready are you sure Im ok what if something goes wrong cause I ate 3/4 of that food.
She said well insurance wont cover you staying you have to go. (Called my insurance and no that was not the case at all). So I go home (crying mind you) and come Friday morning I get a phone call at 9am from my surgeon asking me WHY THE HE!! I left the hospital. I told her what happened and she was so upset and said that is terrible I need you to come in I havent even seen you since the surgery to check you out and no one called me about the food thing. So she opened her office hubby left work to come get me and take me in and she gave me an examination and made me hang out with her for hours (not sure why at that point) then I went home.
So unless you really think you can make a difference I wouldn't work there.
Wow sorry so long winded.
Yeeegads.....I couldn't give specifics, but my daughter was a patient there....they thought she had a tubal pregnancy or something -- did surgery only to find out she was REGULAR pregnant and I now have a 6 y/o granddaughter to prove it. A friend's dad was in there and she said it was horrible. Another person told me of a brain surgery of some kind that went WAY bad and a lawsuit was brought and won. I have only had one person tell me that they were pleased with the care they received there while their father was dying.
Just sounds a little scary....
