Just curious! Because we don't have a pedi-specific rotation in my program, most of my class are not doing much (if any) peds under age 2. It's a bit worrisome since graduation is right around the corner. Apart from getting the CCNA minimums, which is certainly an issue, we are wondering if new grads are generally expected to have a good deal of pediatric exposure.
Also, are CRNAs out there doing kids without pedi anesthesiologist oversight (other than routine T+A & M+T, hernias, and such)? It's a big issue on the West coast, so it would be interesting to compare it to practice in other areas.

I can't say that we have a specific time for pedi cases in my program. We get pedi cases almost weekly since we each are rotated to the outpatient surgical clinic where pedi cases are performed routinely. I guess that's one of the perks that my program has...diversity in surgical cases.

We do several two week pediatric rotations at different times throughout our program, in addition, during our basic anesthesia rotation we do various pediatric cases assigned to us randomly. We have several pediatric anesthesiologists who are very well known and wonderful.

We do a 1 month peds rotation at our main hospital, are also given random peds cases throughout the program, and can opt for a 1 month specialty peds rotation at the childrens hospital downtown. We have four peds MDAs, although I have worked peds with an MDA not specialized.

we do a one month rotation at a childrens hospital in town. other than that we get minor T&A's and dental cases at our main hospital. i haven't been yet so i don't know much about the rotation. at our main hospital the mda's are real protective of the pedi cases and i don't think they ever leave the room even on routine dental cases. however, i know of a senior in my program who is going to the childrens hospital we rotate out to for a full time job when he graduates and says it is pretty autonomous.
Thanks for the replies. Very interesting! Students whose programs send them to pedi hospitals or give them dedicated blocks of pediatric time definitely are a step ahead of those who get minimal exposure.
And FYI - I talked to two different prospective employers this week. Both expressed surprise that I hadn't done many peds yet, and they seem to expect that new grads are comfortable with routine peds. So, SRNAs, I guess the message is that we need to get those peds cases whenever we have the chance, even if we have to scrounge...

We get a month long peds rotation plus some occassional peds cases at our main hospital. Most students meet their requirements in that time, but I think most do not have a high level of confidence with peds on graduation. Our director is currently signing with another clinical site to get us more pediatric cases. The other problem we have is that a lot of our peds cases are healthy kids and we are lacking in doing really sick kids. Hopefully, the added clinical sites will give us the more exposure to providing anesthesia for the sicker little ones.
thank for replying I hope that I can do more being a Pediatric nurse I have not decide in what area but my desire it to be there for these kids and to treat them with love and give them hope that God care for them and there is healing.
