Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) ADN Fall 2020

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

Hello All!

I noticed that there wasn't a thread for this year so I wanted to start one.

I live in near Hartford, CT but applied because of the limited programs in my state.

Im 25 and I want to start a career in Nursing.

I have a BA in Psychology with a low undergrad GPA? of a 2.51.

So I'm taking the longer route to eventually become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

I do have a high pre-req GPA due to class retakes a community college and I've also completed all the pre-req requirements too.

Teas score of 76, and experience as Americorps state member at a health education site with 1700 hours.

Anyone know when we will hear back from admissions?

Hi, I was just wondering if any of you had information on how the schedule for the program ran at stcc? Like how many days a week and or times of day. just trying to get a general idea, other nursing programs in CT states the days and times to be expected but stcc doesnt really give further information on it. Thanks!

Hello! I was in the nursing program September 2019- December 2020 (missing passing by a few points, hoping to get back in for this fall).  Things have changed a bit due to Covid and online classes but the schedule stayed pretty much the same.  Tuesday or Wednesday are clinical days.  First semester is a bit different with the clinical days you can either pick one 12 hour day or two shorter days.  Lab days are either Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.  Lecture is Thursday and Friday.  Tests for freshman are on Thursdays so keep that in mind when signing up for lab.  First semester there is also a Trends class on Thursday afternoon from 12-2.  Hope this helps! Honestly I am super disappointed with the nursing program in general, almost half of my class failed the third semester, so I’m hoping they have improved things for this fall.

Hi! Thank you! Do you always get to choose if your clinical is a 12 hour day or a shorter day? Assuming that means if you pick a 12 hour day you have one day of clinical every week the entire program? And if so do you get to choose which day your clinical is? I’m assuming that means no weekend clinicals? Also so you always get to choose which day you have lab? By the sounds of it that means there definitely no school on mondays? Sorry for all the questions I’m just trying to figure out how many days a week the program ends up being and trying to compare it with another nursing program which by the sounds of it students I’ve talked to at the other program say they same thing about failing out too.

Hello, has anyone heard anything from the waitlist this year or does anyone know about how many people get on the waitlist per year? Thank you.

For the first semester you could pick clinical being two shorter days and one of them might have included Monday as well as Tuesday and Wednesday.  You put your top 3 choices for clinical down including the days and hours (there was an evening clinical option as well) and the first week of school they post a list with everyone’s hours and days.  I think the second semester you can choose two days as well for clinical.  For the 12 hour clinical day some clinical groups did have to go to the hospital the day before to prepare for clinical and pick their patient.  There are no weekend clinicals.  For the most part it is Mondays off, unless you are doing clinical prep at a hospital.  You have to register for which lab day and time you want.  Like I said before, they might have changed things due to Covid but this is how the schedule was the semesters I was in the program.  The first few weeks are usually Monday- Friday with orientation as well and they used to do a Summer orientation before Freshman started And they answer all of your questions there.

Thank you! This helps a lot! There is a one day orientation in May and then a 3 day orientation in June this year but trying to decide between STCC and another school and need to make a decision before then ? noticed you’re also a LPN did you try to test out in the beginning?

What’s the other school? Yes I actually did test out of the first semester but I had to do the whole 3 day orientation first.  And still had to take the trends class one day a week.

Capital community college in Hartford ct, was there a lot of lpns that did that? Do you think it was worth it? I’ve heard mixed things on it

I applied to Capital twice and got waitlisted.  I wanted to go there because you can test out of the first year, but one woman I spoke to there said if you tested out you have to wait a whole year to enter the program and pay for the first year.  STCC said the same thing about paying but they don’t tell you that you pay for the credits.  So I paid $10/credit for Nursing 101, $80.  There were quite a few LPNs in my program but only two of us tested out.  Some of them wanted to take the whole program or wanted more clinical experience in long term care facilities.  I didn’t have to pay for the test so definitely worth it! I saved quite a bit of money by doing that.  I did ask the other students a lot of questions the second semester because for paperwork for clinical I was a little lost but it’s pretty self explanatory.  I don’t feel like I missed out on anything and the clinicals were at long term care facilities which I worked at for 7 years.  There was actually a STCC clinical group at the facility I work per diem at.  So I was definitely glad to have that semester work a little more and save money.
