Spring 2019 Lone Star Hopefuls

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I've decided to make this page for anyone applying for the Spring 2019 ADN program at Lone Star CF/K. I'm so nervous and it's still kinda far away! Good luck!

Has any of the other campuses gotten their schedules yet?

I absolutely love our Kingwood group!! I don’t really know much about Tomball, but I heard Cy-fair was crazy difficult. Choose wisely because your commute does matter! I drove an hour last semester but It wasn’t bad at all. We have students commuting all the way to Kingwood from Rosenberg and Pearland ?

I see !! I have two kids lol , so I need make sure I can survive ? I just checked ,and Montgomery is 30 min way from me and Kingwood is 40! So it’s almost equal ! Have you heard anything about Montgomery ? Where do you have clinicals in Kingwood ? Thank you again ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Hey! What were some kind of experiences that CyFair's students shared with you? I'm starting at cyfair in august and just wanted a heads up so I'm prepcrared! Thank you!

Hey! I'm at Cy-fair right now in my third semester. So Cy-fair is a little different from the other programs as you probably already know because we don't have a summer break. If you're wanting to hunker down and get the program over with as soon as you can, then this is the program you want. Now, with that being said, if you don't have great time management skills, this program will really challenge you. The biggest tips I can give you is to hit the ground running and be on top of everything. The professors have been great and they are willing to work with you, but that doesn't make the material any easier to remember, and I think that goes for all nursing programs. As for the scheduling, I could tell you what mine was, but every semester is different. It all depends on what hospitals can take you and when and then your classes are scheduled around that. We normally don't get our schedules for the semester until about a week before classes start, which makes being flexible a must. Overall, it's not a bad program, we just have a wrap for being more difficult because we have to squeeze a 10-11 week semester into summer where other programs have the full 16 weeks in the fall or spring.

I haven’t heard much about Montgomery. The first semester out clinicals were in the woodlands. This semester they are in Kingwood but we don’t know where yet

I definitely agree with all what you said. That's the best explanation you can give about the cy-fair program. I just graduated from that program in May and it was tough. But it is very doable. You just have to hit the ground running, stay on top of things, don't focus on the minute stuff and remember why you applied to that program in the first place. Although, it is difficult, i honestly believe that is one of the reasons I passed NCLEX soon after graduation. That campus currently sits at a 94% pass rate and all my classmates have not even taken the NCLEX yet. I say this to say that, if you want to apply to cy-fair and you are ready to do the work, then do it. Don't let other people's opinions influence your decision because their experience may not be yours. If I can do it, honestly any of you can. Goodluck to you guys!

What was your schedule for each semester if you don't mind me asking? Also, have you worked at all during the program? I have a part time job that I plan on keeping just because it's easy money and I'm able to study when I'm there. I'm just nervous because we haven't even gotten our schedules yet and I like to plan things out in advance. Thanks so much!

Has CyFair received their book list yet?

The first semester is a bit of a blur for me... we had 4 classes and I was also taking pharmacology and Anatomy 2, so I had a few more classes thrown into my mix... I believe we had classes Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday .. Monday class was in the morning before 12 along with wendesday's class and then Fridays class was around 1-3..

For second semester we had Med surg on mondays from 9-12, then Mental health lecture right after from 12-2 on mondays as well. My group had med surg clinicals on tuesday from 6:30a-5p at cyfair hospital and then mental health clinical on fridays from 6:30a-5p in richmond.

For my third semester that I'm in right now we have med surg lecture from 12-4 on mondays, OB lecture from 9-12 on wednesdays, med surg clinicals from 6:30a to 6:30p on thurdays at methodist willowbrook and OB clinicals from 6:30a-5p on fridays at memorial city..

Now this is just my schedule, and for first semester, we were split into different groups for lab so not all of us had that same schedule. I do have a job, I managed to work full time the first two semesters and I am cutting back a little on hours this semester because it's gotten a little more tedious.. it can be done, as long as you are determined to get it done.
