Spjc Nursing

I was wondering if any of you out there have applied to the St. Pete JC nursing program in Pinellas County, Florida. They have instituted a "competitive application" process instead of their older, whoever finishes with a 2.75 can be put on the waiting list process....anyhow, the first application for competitive application is in May to start in August...but another student today told me that August is first and there are no spots. Then why have a flipping competitive application process? I'm really pissed and wonder if any of you have encountered this craziness at SPJC. After Micro, I will have every pre-req completed and I already have a BS in Business too!

Are you in Micro right now at SPC? Because I go to USF, but I am taking Micro at SPC-gibbs with Mathews.

And about the competitive thing, I am not sure because I plan to go to USF, but I heard they are keeping a waiting list for whatever, but also having the GPA-based system. I'm not sure how it works at spc. At USF, they go soley by GPA and whoever has the highest/got their application in first, gets in (limited number of seats)

It was based on a minimum gpa and then bam you were on the waiting list and as of 1/1/06 there is two criteria...like a points system.....you get 60 points if you complete all your pre-reqs and another 40 based upon gpa....and so it goes. But if there are no spots and they are outwardly telling people this...then why torture us? Ugh...yeah, I was accepted at USF but can't make the commitment time wise out of work for the bachelors...need to get my rn first and then I can do the rn-bsn online at spjc since I'll be working full time at that point.

And I'm taking it in Tarpon Springs with Dr. Icard. And the reason for the poor grade on the exam I fear was my fault. I wasn't sure what exam to prepare for and now I know. Even my note taking approach changed. And she knows what I'm capable of because I have an A in lab without breaking a sweat.

Here's the real scoop. The first competitive application for SPC was this PAST August for Jan. 2006 entry. This is where you are confused that there are no spots available for THAT class. I am in the 4th week of this class and I got in with the competitive application. The next application is due in May for the upcoming August entry. Yes, they are still honoring the waiting list for people that were given that date, but they are not moving anyone forward on the list anymore. There will be spots for the competitive applications.

I was number 11 on the alternate list. They had all of the alternates go to orientation with the rest of the class and were then informed that all alternates were in! (I don't know how many alternates there actually were.) I guess alot of people got tired of waiting for 2-3 years on the waiting list??? I was stunned that I got in because I still hadn't taken micro or ethics yet. I wasn't even going to apply yet. But here I am.....:)

Landshark-the real scoop is much better...thank you and even if I'm competing for one class I'm happy...because its something. Thank you so much for dropping me a line on this one. I appreciate it.

By the way how are you liking it? Are you taking day or night classes? Any tips for me?

NRSNFL,

I'm in the day program. There are two day classes of 36 students each (3 instructors each) and one evening class of 36 students. (I'd swear they said there were 120 something level 1 students. Maybe there's more somewhere else??) Anyway, 12 of the students in my class are "earn as you learn" students chosen by Morton Plant Hospital, so they don't count as far as waiting lists or selective admissions process, but they have them every semester. I can honestly say that of all the rest of the students in my class, I don't know of ANY that didn't get in because of selective admissions. I have no idea where the waiting list people are! Surely there must be some in the class, but my point is there is a lot of room for the selective admissions applicants.

How am I liking it so far? Honestly, it's seems too easy! I'm waiting for the shoe to drop and slam me with work. Actually what I think is happening is that my instructors are making it sooooo easy for us by having power points for EVERYTHING that we download and print out. They contain all (or most) of the important info for the quizzes and tests. The instructors go over the power points with us in class and give big hints as to what we may see again on a quiz. We've already been warned that they don't do any of that for us in levels 2, 3 or 4. :o

Good Luck! Let me know if you make it in and I can give you my opinions on level 1 instructors. (I just love mine, for many reasons.)

Hi,

great to finally find some people from SPC. I will be starting in May...well not with the nursing program but with my prereqs...probably at the Tarpon campus. I'm so excited and just wish that i was already done with those prereqs...it will probably take me forever ! since a&p 1 and 2 and Microbiology i'm planning on taking each one separately so no other classes because a lot of people are saying that these classes involves tons of work and are pretty hard and complicated:uhoh3:

i too heard about the new application process...now i'm kinda stuck....because i wanna get done as fast as i can and start the nursing program but what about my gpa ? how good do i have to be to get in...the faster i go the less time i will have to really concentrate on good grades....

Lost-

I would absolutely do what you're doing, one major course at a time, that way you can give them your all. I will let you know what its like to be accepted, I know since this is the first competitive process I will be competing not only with people who have never applied before but those who are on the waiting list and just waiting. But I do have a chance, so I'll let you know how that goes. Anyhow, if you're interested in a class, you'll do well, so just focus and you'll do great!

oh about the waiting list...after this one there won't be a waiting list anymore right ? meaning if it takes me lets say 2 yrs to finish my prereqs and all the waiting list people are in the program already i won't have to worry about them, correct?
