Does specializing and contuining education automatically increase your pay or is it just a matter of self cultivation or perhaps a little of both?

There's no extra pay where I work for all the different certifications and continuing education out there, although my hospital will pay for some of the national certifications if you pass.

depends on the specialty
and also on yourself to promote yourself

Our facility pays extra for specialty certifications if they are on an approved list for your department. (won't pay for trauma nurse cert unless you work in ED). The differential is approximately the amount needed for continuing education required to maintain your certification. We also have a subscription service to a university's website allowing our employees to do CE online, and free. I think that is pretty generous, as in Texas we must have 20 contact hours with license renewal every 2 years. As for personal growth: I feel no education is wasted.

A little of both, we get paid for the certification, not for any continuing education (although we have a budget we can tap into to get them to pay for our continuing education).
