Peds or NICU (neonatal ICU). These patients are much lighter than adults. However PT can help strengthen weak back muscles. Always use proper body mechanics. I know a nurse who had a herniated disc and had surgery and worked medsurg then worked in the ER. However if you have pain issues after awhile you can do case management. This would be a desk job. I was told to get a desk job by my ortho for AVN in my knee and I still work bedside in the ICU and can't see myself doing anything else. I am too ADD to work in a office.
The best person to ask would be your doctor, you'll need a physical as part of your application process anyways, your doctor would be able to tell you if your back can take the rigors of school clinicals, if he feels accomodations would be in order than speak with the college as there is the persons with disabilities acts and they have to make accomodations within reason which could be for you that you require assistance with pt positioning and moving, however it could bite you in the proverbial backside when you graduate and start job hunting, best option no doubt would be to work with your doctor to rehab you back to maximal condition and go from there, good luck!
