Spanish Anyone?

Specialties Emergency

I have been trying to learn Spanish to help talk care of my Spanish speaking patients more effectively. However, I can't seem to find an appropriate reference book to help me.

Does anyone know of one that is geared toward the medical profession. I would like one that has tapes/CD that actually pronouces the words. With out that, I can't be sure I am saying it correct.:)

Specializes in ER, ICU, L&D, OR.

The problem with only learning basic medical stuff in spanish, is that once you tell the patient something in spanish, they ANSWER in spanish (usually very fast)...and I then have no idea what they just said! ha

Is a very excellent book for learning spanish in the health care context. I took 3 yrs of spanish in high school, and refreshed witht his. One of the most important phrases I learned is "I need you to please speak slowly and use easy words, because I only know a little spanish" I'm one of the few who actually speak enough spanish to tell a patient we are putting in an IV catheter or a urinary one. I'm desperately trying to learn french so I can go to AFRICA soon, but it is not so easy to pronounce the words.

I do speak fluent Spanish after living in Ecuador for 10 years and what gets my goat is that everyone knows it and even if I have a full patient load I get dragged all over the ER to translate. If they had a differential for bilingual nurses it would help....

Specializes in OR, OB, EM, Flight, ICU, PACU.......

The U.S. Army has a great book for quick reference, called the "Medical Multilingual Phrase Book" that has a boatload of languages and common medical phrases/words/terminology ....etc. Should still be available through Paladin Press, or they will know who has it now. I used it many times all over the world.

The military and State Dept. currently use the "Rosetta Stone" series, but they are quite costly (I've heard in the $350 range per), but Berlitz

is more affordable and has been around forever.

Other than learning to speak the language of this country, I hope this helps.
