Hello All,
I'm in the process of completing my pre-req's and found out I have to retake biology!?!?! I have a degree in something non-healthcare related and didn't know if I took biology more than 5 years ago I would have to do it over again. Soooo, my question is what is the difference between general biology vs intro to biology? It's been so long ago I don't remember which one I took. Thanks for your help!!

Essentially no difference, but you should read the course descriptions to see which better meets your needs. Before you retake the course, you might try getting a waiver for the retake. People have posted that they got out of retaking courses by requesting, and receiving, waivers. Worth a try.
Thanks World Class!!!
Usually they will have two different courses where one might be 3 semester hours versus 4 semester hours. The four semester hour course will have more content presented in a more stringent format and will be more geared for majors versus allied health or general students. It might meet three times a week versus once or twice. Given the choice, most allied health students would choose the less stringent course, since both will fit their requirement.

If you have a choice between multiple professors I would base your decision on that. Look each one up on ratemyprofessor.com. If you have a professor that is passionate about what they teach and engages their students I would go for that class. An excellent teacher makes a world of difference when is comes to sciences. Or you could always try to CLEP out.

From where is the requirement being issued? Is it (1) a prerequisite for taking OTHER prerequisites, such as Anatomy & Physiology, or Microbiology? Or is it (2) an academic requirement of the nursing program you hope to attend?
If it's #1, I'd check with the dept. chair and/or advisor to see if you can get a waiver. If you had an overall high GPA during your prior undergrad experience, and you got an A in the class, they may let you slide. It's worth asking - it might even pay off!
If it's #2, and you're not absolutely sure from the description on their website, contact the nursing program's admission coordinator for guidance. List your choices along with their course descriptions (as listed in the catalog), and ask the coordinator which Biology course will fulfill the nursing program's requirement. You can phone them, but I strongly recommend that you send an email to which they can respond in writing. Then you have documentation if there's a screwup later (I've seen many students have to delay their nursing program start date because they took the "wrong" course).
Good luck!!

I believe the intro to biology is a pre-req to general biology. Most times its the general biology that nursing school accepts. Ask the nursing department of whatever school you are attending which course they will accept. Also, if you are going through a community college for you ADN/ASN and you plan to transfer to a university later, make sure they will also accept your course.
