Today in class a large group of about 6 boys were sitting in front of me during special topics class. We were doing our group work when I overheard one of them tell the others
"I'm not cleaning up poop. When we're in clinicals and my patient poops I'm going to be all 'uh nurse's aide come clean this up.' "
  :lol2:
Are they for real? I have a feeling that a lot of these guys are going to be VERY surprised to find out what real nursing is when we get to clinicals next semester. They're all talking about being CRNAs and nurse practitioners, but I'd like to see how many of them stick around after the first year of having to actually deal with patients (and their poop).
Anyone else have students like this in their class? And did they learn to deal with the real world or were those students conspicuously absent at graduation?

They better not ever have kids!
Edit: And what does this guy do every day when he goes #2?

Yeah, I've heard students with that attitude in class, but once they get to clinical, the instructors have had to change their attitude, much to their dismay. Keep in mind (trying not to sterotype :chuckle), but these guys may need to keep up the macho image around their buddies, but will step up and do the job when the time comes. All you can do is set a good example for them, and throw a little guilt their way when you ask how they could leave a patient in need. :loveya:
I have no idea! Maybe he thinks his doesn't stink :chuckle

They better hope their clinical instructor never hears that....
They could be in for a big shock on their first rotation!! (We had to do all care for our patients, and trust me, there was plenty of poop to go around!!) I'm sure their instructor will be more than happy to give them a needy patient to change that attitude real quick!

when youre a student nurse you are lowest on the totem pole
the CNA would laugh hysterically if ordered to do something by us.
now, asking politely if they would help you so you can learn their mad skills...seems to work :)
they help me alot and im grateful for them

I'm curious to see what our first days of clinical bring, if I make it that far. Everyone seems to intellectually be ok with "poop" but I cant help but wonder how many actually ARE ok with it when the time comes.
We shall see!
As for the CRNAs, if they want it bad enough, they'll deal with whatever it takes to get from point A to point B.
