Someone saying that they are a LVN when they are not!

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

There is a patient's family member that is telling people that she is a LVN but I find out that she is nothing more than a sitter. This is against the law, right?

I can't believe that nerve of her. She goes around telling people that she is an LVN when you is clearly not!! uhhgg! This is a disgrace to nurses everywhere who work their (excuse my langauge) off to earn their title. I'm an LPN student and I don't go around teling people that I'm a nurse. if anything I say "I'm gonna be a nurse." It is illegal to claim to be a nurse when you are not, doesn't she know that? Also she can do some pt harm if she keeps it up or even worse. I say, make her aware of what she is doing. hope all goes well. :):nurse:

On another note she is his mother and as long as she doesn't interfere with his care, you may want to include her with some non nursing tasks of her son. She will feel important and needed and leave you to do your work. Hope this helps and good luck.:wink2:

This is another thing which really upsets me that I didn't share. She told a RT that I let her put in a NGT in the patient/her son, because he didn't want me to insert it and that he had pointed to her, indicating that he wanted her to put it in and that I let her. She also told the RT that after she put it in, I listened with the stethoscope to confirm placement and that she put it in the right place. WTH?!?!? Where does she come up with this stuff? I found out about this at the end of the shift on Tues, am off today Wed, and back to work on Thurs. You better believe that I will be confronting her about this when I see her and telling my manager.

Falsely bragging is one thing....... But lying about something you as a nurse didn't do is another. She could cause you to lose your license by saying you let her put down an NG tube.

Ditto this; someone lying about your actions as a licensed professional is going to cause you some difficulty. Nip it now.

Oh, you definitely need to take care of this. I would go to your nurse manager or DON and write up everything you were told by RT and have RT sign it. Then the DON can confront the "nurse" about this. She sounds like she has a need to feel important, but she is way out of line claiming to pass a tube, you did. Good Luck.

First, by law they can be charged with impersoninating a nurse only if they practice nursing skills. Second people lie ALL THE TIME. Third "nothing more than a ..." you need to take a long look at that statement, and the next time an RN belittles you remember that you are nothing more..... it takes every single one of us... no matter what the title is to make it work, and I tell tose under me that all the time.

I practiced for a long time as an LPN/Paramedic before completing my RN degree, and all too often had RN's make similar statements to me. "your just an LPN' was my all time favorite... " . Needless to say that comment was followed up by a " I may be just an LPN but I am smarter than you" : )

I would nip this right now, I once had one just like this telling everyone she was an RN, she told them I also let her put in her mothers IV, which in fact I performed this "hard stick" on my own! Nip it now!

I ditto this. That was way out of line. ya better take care of this now, she could cause harm to the pts or you will loose your license. Remember, that if she "claims" to do something and if anything goes worng and it is your pt, it's stlil you that is gonna get into trouble. pls don't let that happen. This lady has escalated too far. Report this to your manager. :nurse:

I would definately be doing a lot of documenting on everything so that she doesn't get you into trouble. I don't know why she feels she has to lie about things like this.

Yes, and that is so irritating! we nurses work hard and go through the ringer to EARN our license and the RIGHT to call ourselves nurses! When I was a CNA, I always corrected patients if they called me nurse. I always told them so and so is your nurse, I am the nurse aide. In nursing school, as classmate asked our instructor if we could wear white clogs instead of "standard" student shoes. Our instructor said "No. You have not earned that right. When you graduate, you can". We thought it was funny. Now being a nurse, I am glad we have to earn those little things, because we are reminded of our duty and our struggles as nurses. On our clinical rotation as a student, a CNA walked into the patients room and introduced herself as the patient's "nurse". I was annoyed, but did not want to embarass her. After she left, I told the patient that so and so is her nurse, and I am her STUDENT nurse. The patient then asked who the girl was. I told her, she is your nurse aide. She then asked "why did she say she was the nurse?". This is a touchy subject with me because I was a CNA and am now a nurse. CNA's should know better, and are taught to not "play nurse" or misrepresent themselves as such.

Yes, it is unfortunate she feels she needs to call herself a nurse. The only time it would be illegal is if she tried to present herself as a nurse for employment. I've heard that there are Medical Assistants that call themselves Physicans Assitants....Oh Please!!!! :-)

I hate that!! I have a pt and her mother just keeps saying that she was an LPN... I looked her up and that was a lie!! She was a CNA!! LOL

She always tell us (the nurses) about what she use to do AS A NURSE... She hates when we (the nurses) no more than her. When you do she goes on a powertrip... Saying "If we were in a facility then I would MAKE U do it this way!! LMAO

I worked hard to use the term NURSE... so I think it should not be used lightly!! :twocents:
