what is it and what does it do
since there are barely any nursing jobs out there, i am going to have the hardest time landing one for myself as well.
so, i'm assuming this 'new grad program' is something employers create that only hire new grads? from what i've been hearing, hospitals/nursing homes wont hire new grads specially if you have no experience!! (how the hell am i gonna get experience if someone doesn't hire me to begin with?)
and what is considered a 'new grad' cuz i've graduated in 2008 and finally passed my boards and now it's 2010..****!!

To me a new grad would be anyone that has never worked as a nurse before. I actually had a co-worker that had been out of school for a year, but had not passed boards until later or practiced as an RN. She went through the same orientation program as the new graduates.
When I was a new grad I had a couple options at the facility I worked at. New grads could go through the traditional orientation - 12 weeks orientation w/ an assigned preceptor on your floor. If you didn't feel like that was enough, you had the option of signing a contract stating you would work for the hospital for 2 years (and this 2 years started when you were on your own and away from your preceptor) and with that you were allowed 6 months with your assigned preceptor plus you got to take various classes. I didn't want to sign any contract, so I went the traditional route. It was hard, but when I decided to leave after only 9 months at that hospital, I was thankful I had no contract that I was obligated to.
At my current hospital, I believe new grads are given a series of classes + they are with their assigned preceptor for 12 weeks or so. I am not sure if any contracts come into play as I was already an experienced nurse when I came to this hospital.
I hope everything works out for you!

The hospital in which my school is through has a new grad internship program. You apply through HR, interview, and if you're offerred a position you begin June 1st. Different areas have different lengths of internships...I'm in the ER, so I will be orienting for around 20ish weeks. Each Tuesday is a class and I will be with a preceptor the rest of the time, working their schedule. After the orientation time is complete and I'm evaluated, I will be practicing on my own.
Thanks for the responses guys. I'm a LPN so are there new grad programs for LPNs? So, basically this new grad program is sorta like an internship in which you are not paid but just trained for weeks and eventually you get hired permanently with a pay? Do I just call around nursing homes and hospital to see if they have new grad program?
I will be paid during my internship...it's basically classes + job orientation, and they call it an 'internship' for some reason. I would just call local hospitals and facilities and see what they have...good luck to you!
No, you are paid. At least I was during my orientation. I am not sure about programs for LPNs. You would just have to call around to different places and speak with HR.
GL!!
Thank u. I will definately do that.

Thanks. I will call local nursing homes since Cali hospitals don't hire LVNs anymore and ask about new grad program.
