Sociology Requirement

I am debating what to do to fulfill my Sociology requirement. I got the CLEP study guide for the Intro to Sociology exam and it looks kind of overwhelming with memorizing theorists and theories. Has anyone done Gerontology for their sociology requirement? I got the SG101 CD for this but was going to use it as my 2nd choice since the CLEP is so much cheaper... but I am seriously considering both options. Any opinions either way??

Thanks guys. :-)

Check at the Community College and see if they have a SOC 101 class that is online. Way easier! I used Rio Salado College and completed it it less than 8 weeks. And it was EASY !

I thought that CLEP sociology was the easiest test I took out of all the exams I have ever taken!

I am only 2 weeks from finishing my BSN through Excelsior so I know all the tests!:yeah:

AZMO, I did look into taking it at my local CC, I looked at the syllabus and it requires papers. I don't wanna write any papers, lol.

MelodyRN, thanks for your response, I went ahead and purchased a subscription to Instacert.com at the recommendation of some other friends and hopefully between that site and the REA CLEP guide I will be able to pass this CLEP exam. The price is just so much more affordable.

What study materials did you use for the CLEP? Had you taken Sociology before? How long did you study for?

That was the very first test I took back in Jan 2005! I overstudied since I didn't know what to expect. I studied for 8 weeks I believe. I used a copy of a college network study guide I got on ebay, and a Sociology study guide (not REA) from Barnes and Noble. Out of a possible 80 I got a 77! Now all you need is a 50 or above, back when I took it Excelsior gave a letter grade for most CLEP exams.

I'm in that Rio Salodo Soc101 now, and it is easy. They have a special stripped-down textbook that really limits the amount of material that you must read. There 11 lessons, many of which are just one chapter but at least one is 2 chapters. There is a quiz per each lesson, 11 quizzes. There are 5 short answer assignments of maybe 5 questions each. And a final exam, and it's all online. Lots of what I am reading echos the general psych and the human growth and development class that I took. I'm on the 3rd week, since I started my course in Jan. Cost was about $640 + $55 or $60 for the book. The extra thing that they try to sell you is one of those plastic laminated things that summarizes the basics of Soc 101.

I'd have tried to CLEP out, but I needed the course to boost me to full time status.

eta: Rio will take credit cards and will bill in installments. I'm paying in 3. I think you can stretch it to 4, maybe.

I'm doing the CLEP exam, I can't pass up the savings.

I got the REA study guide, and a core concepts guide to Sociology. And CLEP has an outline you can get from their web site, it is like ECs outlines.

If you can master the EC exams and the Content Outline to study, you do this too. :)
