SoCal Hospital - no raise this year ... pls help!

U.S.A. California

I'm a nurse in SoCal in the hospital. My hospital just announced this week that there will be no merit raises this year. My hospital only offers annual merit raises, no raises for cost of living or inflation. The hospital administrators told us they are in the red and trying to cut costs and salaries are the biggest expense. We were told that all hospitals are suffering financially. I'm frustrated b/c the cost of gas is increasing, housing cost a fortune in SoCal and I'm not going to be compensated for any of this. Can you tell me if this is normal not to get an annual raise? Any advice on how to handle this? I'm extremely frustrated. Some RNs have talked about calling in the union to help protect us. Would that solve the situation or cause more problems?

Just bend over and take it. I'm sure that the CEO will be making an extra million thanks to you and your co-workers willingness to accept a lower standard of living. (sarcasm) You obviously are not part of a union. Time to organize or leave.

Very good point! That's why I hate it when people give the old "Just be thankful you have a job" or "There's no law that says the company is obligated to give you a raise." It's just decency to at least give a cost of living raise. Okay, end of rant.

True. Slaves had jobs plus room and board. Should they have been thankful too? In an era of record corporate profits and CEO compensation the typical American workers continue to be forced to lower their compensation. Fortunately they can't outsource patient care. Contact the CNA and get a 20% increase or force the hospital out of operation. There are plenty of jobs out there for nurses. You don't need to take be treated like this.

I agree ... although I think the cost of living raises are pathetic. California housing prices doubled in the last five years with at least 20 percent increases each year. Housing prices are now going down but I seriously doubt the prices will drop to what they were five years ago.

If your potential mortgage payment is going up by 20 percent per year and gas prices are going up nearly as much, but you're only getting 3-4 percent cost of living raises then ... it is ridiculous.

I'm not sure why some nurses scold other nurses for wanting more money ... especially when hospitals make millions at our expense. I figure the scolding nurses must be in management ... afterall, their bonuses are often tied to keeping our wages low.

Then, of course, they'll complain they can't find any nurses ... well, duh ... raise the pay. Some hospital chain called me the other day wanting to know why I didn't want to work them. I told them the pay was pathetic ... plain and simple ... but they didn't want to hear that.

You can bet their profits are up by 20 percent a year and then some. God forbid that they only make $100 million this year instead of $150 million ... I am NOT going to to subsidize their profits.

SHOW ME THE MONEY ... if you don't ... I won't work for you either.

My sentiments exactly! It's time to let your feet do the talkin' honey, if you guys don't have a union, well, it's time to get one. If not, get outta there!;)

qt314nf please don't get the impression that this is not a business. My friends work for a downtown LA hospital where they cut the CNA's and give the charge nurses a full load to "make up " for a lawsuit they had. A nurse, no a person, can only be taken advantage of as much as they allow.

p.s. I wonder if they needed to cut staff and had to fire you, would they consider your years of service or devotion to the hospital? Probably not, because that's business.
