SoCal ADN/BSN Recommendations? Low GPA

Published

Backstory:

Single Unemployed Mother of Child with Special Needs. Just finished my prerequisites with a GPA of 3.0, it hasn't been a very easy journey for me. I just got accepted into COPE Health Scholars hoping that will boost my application. Will have two Associates Degrees, Natural Sciences and i believe the other Social and Behavioral Sciences. I petitioned for those hoping those will also boost my application. Awaiting to take the TEAS but expect to score in the 80 percentile.

Anatomy: A

Physio: A

Micro: B

Chem: C

My question is should i bother applying into CSU to get into BSN programs? I'm feeling very discouraged and i don't think i'll even make it in with my GPA. Heck i don't even know if i'm competitive enough to make it into an ADN program. Can anyone recommend schools i should look into or apply to? Should i retake classes?

Hi Keikozb, I just wanted to come in and tell you not to be discouraged. I am not sure where in SoCal you are but as far as your GPA it is not bad. Here in San Diego the chem class does not even count towards your total points for an ADN program. Science GPA is based on Anatomy, Physiology, and Micro, and the regular course GPA is based off English, Math, Psychology and/or Sociology, Child Development, Communication. Of course they also look at your TEAS score. I capitalized all the classes so they will stand out and you know what an associates program will consider. CSUs are a bit different but I'd say apply to every and all programs you are interested in after taking the teas. - Best of luck

Hi there,

Your grades are pretty decent, but as the person above me^^^^ said, you really just need to sit down & take a look at all the programs you're interested in to see what they recommend or what you need to do. A good resource is here at Allnurses because you have a lot of students posting what their GPA was and what else they did to get accepted into programs. Just do a general search in the STUDENT section of this website and hopefully something will come up.

One thing I will mention is some programs (BSN, mainly) do actually take into consideration Chemistry grades. It's odd there are some that want you to have Statistics, others want Nutrition and others want Chemistry, etc.. This is why I also recommend taking a look at all schools and see what they require. Also be aware of recency requirements in case you took some classes long ago.

I'll be frank, nursing schools are extremely competitive. Especially those which cost less which are the ADN community college ones and the CSU system. Most people applying and getting accepted are going to have all A's in their main science prerequisites. It is stiff competition out there! From what I've read on Allnurses, a good majority that are accepted are scoring in the high 80's to 90's in the TEAS. I would suggest studying more and not rushing if you don't have to when it comes to taking the TEAS.

This is off-topic of school, but you mentioned you have a special needs child. Please be aware that nursing school will take a lot of your time. Hopefully you have a good support system in place because you will need one -- not only to support you if the going gets rough, but to help out w/childcare if need be.

Never be discouraged or give up your dream! Where there's a will, there's a way!
